When is Uncrowned?

8/2/2019

Though I've spent much of my time working on Of Kings and Killers, I know (from the 8,761 emails and messages and comments I've gotten on the subject) that what you guys are really waiting on is Uncrowned.

So, since Uncrowned didn't come out yesterday (as I jokingly suggested it would in my April Fool's post), when is it coming out?

Before skeletons dance
Before pumpkins swallow candle-lights
Before bats hang from rafters and cobwebs paint the corners
Uncrowned will haunt you first

See if you can crack that master-level riddle, Batman!

A devious person might suggest that, to make any comment such as this, I must have already written some percentage of Uncrowned as well as Of Kings and Killers. Well, indeed I have written a measure of both.

Here's one line (out of context) from Cradle 7, Uncrowned:
Picture
Not enough?

All right, how about a second line that is actually included in Uncrowned. Get ready to have your minds blown that I would include such an original line:

Yes, he could, but will has churned out books quite fast in the past before, and well over a year seems like far to long of a wait for him, especially for something that a majority of his readers are begging for

Guys, look at the progress bar! “136%” “Elder Remnant” “Calder battled Lindon for supremacy.” “Of Uncrowned and Killers” ...I suppose this means that Of Killers and Kings is coming out either way, if it’s in the title and Shera isn’t worried about being kicked out (she’s probably sleeping). Here’s a thought: where do all the timelines intersect? Traveler’s Gate probably takes place before Sea/Shadow based on the THOUSAND-YEAR OLD records of the “Wanderer” who is probably Valin. But where does Cradle fit in? Also, are these the right names for the Iterations?
Cradle: Cradle (duh)
OSAS: Asylum
TG: Amalgam (?) (I think this one is wrong

Side-side note: does anyone read both Cradle and My Hero Academia/Boku no Hero Academia?

On November 29th, 2017 at 04:12:56 pm (I was in a different country at the time, so your numbers might be different), Will Wight said (and here I quote) “Traveler’s Gate takes place slightly before Cradle, and Elder Empire takes place after Cradle (or at least where Cradle is now). I don’t want to lock myself into anything more specific than that.”

Hmm, based on that impenetrable riddle, I assume it's referencing the forecasted apocalypse, when civilization is in ruins, cobwebs infest corners, and our skeletons dance jigs in the remains of the great cities?

Not all that specific a time frame, so Uncrowned is coming out sometime in the next 1-250 years?

Not super helpful...

I have been waiting Of Kings & Killers for a whole minute! Very excited! Can't wait to see how the stories of Shera & Calder Martin play out. Very excited about Uncrowned also. Weight Shi Lindon has become one of my favorite book characters next to Drizzt Do'Urden, Pug and Thomas, and Mordechai Eleniel (probably spelled his last name wrong...but, oh well). You, sir, have become one of my favorite authors also. I enjoy your books and read them all in succession over again when a new one comes out. Thanks for the good reads and keep up the good work.

Underlord ended on not ONE but TWO cliffhangers, and is the exact opposite of a good place for a break. Personally I thought Ghostwater left at a nice pausing point to work on OKAK. Now I’m torn because I really want to read more about Shera & friends, (though Caulder can die in a ditch for all I care, and yes I have read both perspectives up to this point). I am dying to get follow up on the ending(s) of Underlord.

See, I would agree with Shera and friends' approach, except having multiple leaders in this setting provides an excellent excuse for an Elder corrupted (or just greedy) leader of a sub territory to point at the leader of another sub territory, say "They're working for the Elders!" and declare war. Potential for mass chaos is high.

Calder's approach seems to be the more realistic one, one point of easily assassinated failure. But making that point of easily assassinated failure the person the Elders picked to be the easily assassinated point of failure is another disaster waiting to happen! And you can't even say "well Calder's wife has a point, maybe humanity can work with the Elders" because the longer Cradle goes on, the more it becomes clear that the Abidan definitely had a point when they locked the Elders in Asylum, and they are definitely not capable of working with humans.

Count De Monet
8/18/2019 05:30:25 pm

Yes, Underlord left us with 2 cliffhangers.
What I mean thigh by Underlord leaving us at a good place is that Lindon and party has made it through the gold ranks and have caught up to Eithan. I predict 3 books to see them through the lord ranks and into herald.
Those cliffhangers will serve the purpose of keeping our interests in Cradle while we wait for Will to wrap up OKAK.

I for one am extremely glad I stumbled upon the Cradle series a year or so ago. It was so good that I burned through everything else he has written. I have noticed that with the demand of the books he has been producing them fairly quickly now and at least for the last one it seemed it was a little bit shorter though all the better for how it ended. I just got done with my second read through the series when it came out so I only read Underlord by itself. I'm looking forward to reading a series and as a writer myself trying to glean as much as I can. Translation I won't try to steal everything that's not nailed to the floor I'll just try to figure out how the hell he nailed it.

We're going to see at least 8 months pass in Uncrowned. That seems like *plenty* of time for Orthos to shake things up in SV and maybe teach Kelsa enough to get her to Jade.

They're so ignorant that if she makes it to Jade knowing all four White Fox techniques she may be able to deal with the Heaven's Glory problems herself.

CN
8/11/2019 11:05:00 am

That cliffhanger about SV seems like he's setting up for a whole new series focused around Kelsa, Orthos, Jai Long and his sister. Could be really interesting as a a second series once OKAK is finished. I think I've read Will say he wants to be able to start a new project in the future and alternate between series.

I sorta feel bad(I don’t actually feel bad because I’m a selfish bastard and love me some Cradle) for Elder Empire people because it keeps seemingly getting tossed on the back burner in favor of Cradle. Whether that is because Cradle is just flowing better for Will or because Cradle is his golden goose so his unconscious makes it flow easier or whatever, anyway I’m glad. I know the majority of Will’s fans would be disappointed for anything other than Cradle to be released every release. It’s like anything other than Cradle would have to come out like only a couple months after a Cradle release when the expectation of another Cradle release is low. That’s totally not fair to Will but it is what it is when you ride the sacred tiger.

See, I'd be happy to wait for another Cradle book, if the Cradle books didn't end on major cliffhangers that leave me desperate to know what happens next. And what happens next could be literally anything, just because they're supposed to compete in the Uncrowned tournament doesn't mean the tournament will go as planned (see Ghostwater, team exploration of abandoned research lab turned into frantic fighting for their individual lives). If the last chapter of Underlord had been the first chapter of Uncrowned, I would be less anxious to see what happens next, because we do have some idea of what to expect. While with Elder Empire... the structure of the series gives me some idea of how it will end (if one set of protagonists wins, people who like that storyline will be disappointed, both sets cannot win, therefore both will likely lose) and so there isn't the desperation to see which completely unexpected thing will happen next.

It's much easier to be patient waiting for a book when you have a rough idea of what will happen.

Its funny that you mention one side has to win, because in my mind over and over as read these books there seems to be only one constant on that front. "Humans are not going to win". There are 7 incarnations of Chaos, beings that rival Abbidan Judges in power and probably supersede them in longevity on Asylum. These are beings that eat iterations for breakfast. They are not going to lose to people who are not even powerful enough to challenge the top tier of beings on Cradle. Only way I really see EE ending is us realizing everything has been a careful plot of the Great Elders all along and humanity/The Way loses. While the Elders are unleashed on the Williverse

Madeline
8/12/2019 01:10:03 pm

Actually, I don't think one side has to win! It's one of the four possible outcomes (both sides win, one side wins, both sides lose) but I do agree that both sides lose is the most likely outcome, and that's why I don't care about the ending as much as the next Cradle book. OKAK feels too much like watching a slow motion train wreck with napalm thrown on top.

Sword Immortal Darknorth
8/8/2019 08:55:14 am

I think Cradle is just closer to what Will is reading right now. From what he said a few months ago, he's been following mostly translated light novels, so that's what he finds easiest to write. A lot of those a cultivation novels, so it's no surprise Will finds it easy to write a xianxia-inspired novel when that's what he's been reading.

Feel worse for Traveler's Gate/Blade people! I am waiting in suspense about SO MANY things!
Will Leah kick the bucket?
Will Simon actually become a half-decent Valinhall traveler?
Is Amalgam allowed by the Abidan, or is it just an accident from corrupted world fragments?
Are we going to meet more territories?
Will Valinhall get rid of those ridiculous fake cloaks?
Is Leah going to push Simon over the edge?
Are all the Dragon's Fangs be collected?
Will Erastes finally convert his infantry sword into Valinhall's 14th Fang?
What Creatures live in Ragnarus?
What's with Rangnarus Founder's deal with Cynara, & why is Leah getting the one eye with ravens(Odin package?
Are Cynara and Zakareth hooking up? (Yes, I know he's dead, but, well, Valin is still around...)
What power is going to be bound to that super-tough room that Kai went into?
If the tartarus Incarnation is the trial for the gallery's masks, how is Valinhall going to keep recreating it?
When is Lycus going to become a Valinhall Traveler like his big sister?
Is Olissa slowly becoming the room guardian for the workshop?
Does Chaka's garden have a power? If so, can Simon ever get it what with how Chaka hates him?
How do you banish Fangs in the House?
Just to clarify, the golden elixir comes from the healing pool, right?
Oops.

Calera (I swear this isn’t a ship name)
8/11/2019 11:51:19 pm

How will OKAK end? Who will win? Both sides have fans (although Shera I believe has more), and they always seemed to be designed as two opposed protagonists, so if either side wins, there’s a whole set of disappointed people. Therefore, the series will likely end with one of several options:
Option 1: Everyone DIES (or at least Shera and Calder). 💀☠️💀Simple and easy. A Great Elder gets loose, humanity dies. Don’t worry, though, we’ll be seeing a sequel! Hmm... “Rise of the New Emperor - Synopsis: Millennia ago, an Emperor rose to overthrow the Great Elders and end their subjugation of humanity. He lived to be thousands of years old, protecting the Empire from the Great Elders- until he died. The Great Elders forced humanity back under their nonexistent thumbs (maybe Kelarac has thumbs? I don’t think most of them do). But now, a hero rises to save all of humankind.” Probability: Highly Unlikely.

Option 2: 🎶Team up, team up, everybody everywhere!~ Team up, team up, everybody do your share!~🎶 Back to the classics! Enemies are forced together by circumstances beyond their control to team up and fight together against an unknown evil! Wow! Probability: ??? Provides a happy (maybe) ending for both sets of protagonists, or at least the same/similar ending, but it does seem rather cliché.

Option 3: 😇Divine Intervention👿 A Great Elder tries to escape from Amalgam! The Abidan arrive! Shera and Calder get recruited! Wow! Problems solved through the power of friendship! Probability: Extremely Unlikely, though the attempt to break out could occur.

Option 4: Psyche! The plot didn’t happen! The story didn’t exist! The world is the figment of someone’s imagination! Now, it’s time for the real story! It shall be called... “Calera’s Awakening!” You see, the story is actually about a kid named Calera who made up two self inserts from different parts of their personality! But then, it turns out... the world was real all along??!! Double Psyche! Probability: What Is Even Happening

Option 5: Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. Del- Probability: Extremely High.

I don’t even know where this started going. I swear it started out serious but got progressively more and more ridiculous!

Odd Thought: about that name... does anyone even ship it? I’d be surprised, mostly because Calder and Shera were in relationships until they were brought to a swift end. (I don’t, by the way)

I think Will explicitly said that won't happen. They're enemies, Shera blames Calder for stuff(partly Lucan's death), and Calder blames Shera for stuff(Urzaia's death and you know for partly kidnapping his wife.)
Not that may not find common ground eventually, but I dont think people can expect more than Begrudging allies here.

I have a few theories on what will happen. 90% sure he will at some point duel yerins group. 50% he will gain Arelius by using his arm on Eithan. 20% his relationship with Mercy changes. 10% the duel agianst yerins group is a death match but after the life path women is killed and before anyone else does (except maybe the third for lindons team) the next dredgod is fully awakened and halts the tournament. I'm very curious if any of these actually come out true.

It's all lies. I put my dancing skeletons on the porch yesterday, stuffed a candle down the throat of a surprised pumpkin, and threw a few bats in the web of a Darwin’s bark spider I imported from Madagascar.

After all that effort, still no book. ;p

Any word on the Audible version? I went through the whole series on audible as I "read" when I am doing work or just need some variety of background noise to focus.

I am Also an Audible Listener, with any hope it will be like the other books in the series so far and out relatively quickly if not the same time as when the book releases.

Just keep are fingers crossed.

Accidentally re-read the Elder Empire too quickly, was hoping OKAK was going to come out earlier than later. Any release date hints on OKAK?

Will Wight is cycling through the Cradle book covers on his Facebook page. This happened the other times a new book was being released. Since Will is changing the cover every two days it looks like Uncrowned will be released on September 1st

Right when his friend, Andrewe Rowe, is releasing his next book. Coincidence? I think not.

No, he’s going to reveal the cover and announce it for October 1 release. He did the same thing for Underlord’s release

Wait... So Asylum is OKAK world, but Suriels prescence mentioned that Asylum is where they keep Fiends of Chaos that represent potential lethal threats to Judges. If that is true, then why are humans living there? Yes, the eldari pact forbids Abidan from interfering in the fate of an Iteration, but if the Great elders, or Fiends of Chaos came from outside, then shouldn't they be considered an outside interference, like Li Markuth, and moved to another Iteration without any humans? Also, If Great Elders=Fiends of Chaos capable of killing judges, then how did the Emperor defeat multiple of them? Also, the OKAK empire is called the Auerelian empire, and Marcus Auerilius was a roman emperor. If anyone has any thoughts about any of these things, please let me know in the comments below.

Asylum needs to be connected to the way so that the Great Elders can be locked down in an ordered world. That means there needs to be human habitation for it to be possible for the iteration to have said connection to the way.

That would make sense, but it still seems cruel. Still, for a important prison, wouldn't their be abidan guards their? that would kill great elders whenever they came back to life? my best guess is that great elders are under a curse that makes them far less powerful. would explain a lot of stuff.

Any updates on whether or not a Kickstarter will be tied to this for extra-chocolately-goodness versions?
