I expected the city to have more of a golden glow. Not sure what's up with the lavender overtones. Unless of course, that isn't actually the city of light. It could be another territory impersonating the city of light. Yeah, I bet that's what this is. Will, you should do something about this ASAP. Forget about publishing your book, find out whose impersonating the city of light and execute them pronto!

Other than the unexpected color scheme, the cover looks good.

Ooooh, I like. While I have nothing against the other two covers, I think this one does take a leap forward in terms of quality and eye-catching imagery. Can definitely see the progression from 'completely unknown self-publisher' to 'Holy-shit, this guy actually managed to self-publish!' with your works.

So glad this book is going to be ready in the near future - my circadian rhythms are destroyed by a jacked up work schedule (Army FTW) and it will be nice to have a book I looked forward to in hand to keep me company during night shifts.

Anywho - congratulations on finishing up at such a breakneck speed. While I love writers like Patrick Rothfuss who are meticulous, perfect and godawful slow in their writing - I am always amazed and impressed when an author pushes out more than a book a year.

This is just a barely thought through idea but what if in the next book in this universe after the valin one you introduce another territory made of a corrupted Elysian light called Dis? Possibly made by a mad scientist trying to replicate valinhall?

Reply
Will Wight link
4/9/2014 05:43:52 am

You should know that I can never, ever take suggestions this specific. Unclear intellectual copyright.

Now, even if I was already planning on creating a Territory of corrupted light--or a Territory called Dis--I couldn't do it, because you might have the case for a lawsuit.

Would you win the suit? Probably not. But the point remains that I wouldn't risk it by using an idea that was significantly similar to something a fan suggested.

So...please stop posting such specific ideas. If you did happen to post something that I wanted to use, you might cause me some trouble.

To clarify:

"In your next series, you could have someone try to replicate Valinhall and screw up." = Valid suggestion. It's an idea that I may have already had, but it's vague enough that I could go any direction with it.

"In your next series, your protagonist should be Simon's daughter, a blue-haired Valinhall/Elysia dual Traveler with two swords." = Too specific. Pull back. Now, even if I HAD been planning on doing exactly that, I'd have to change it, or it would look like I was stealing your idea.

Again, even if you did sue me for something like that, it probably wouldn't go anywhere because you DID intend it as a suggestion. But I don't want to take the risk.

Before the inevitable questions: fanfiction is in a different category. Apparently.

I'm currently taking legal advice from many different sources, some of whom are only questionably professional, but I genuinely don't want to run the risk of any trouble with the law. At all. And copyright law is such a vague, nebulous swamp that any number of terrible traps could be lurking within.

So, from here on out, just...use your best judgment. Ideas are great, fanfiction is great, just don't get too specific with your suggestions lest I land in trouble.

Will M
4/9/2014 08:27:40 am

You may want to think about some version control software for your writing. We use some where I program and it's pretty cool for programming use. With version control, you could point to a day and a revision and say, "See I was developing this idea back in 2012. You didn't mention it in a blog post till 2014. This idea is mine." We use redmine (http://www.redmine.org/) and SVN at different times times for document tracking. Both are free but not really useful for document tracking. I've never used it but zoho docs (http://www.zoho.com/docs/) looks interesting and may be all you need and has a free plan. Of course the easiest thing would be to have people not post specific ideas.

Bryce
4/9/2014 09:36:03 am

I read somewhere that one thing people do is to mail or email themselves or someone they know with their ideas etc and they get postmarked or time stamped.

harlequin
4/9/2014 11:12:34 am

This is, I believe, the second time you've asked a question about the Kindle Fire HD, so let me answer you more thoroughly:

As Tempest said, the same time as for any other Kindle. There is no difference in availability based on your device. All a Kindle device--or a free Kindle app for your smartphone or computer--allows you to do is to access the Kindle Store. As soon as the book is uploaded to the Kindle Store, it will be available on all Kindle-enabled devices in that region...

...including, fortunately, the Kindle Fire HD.

All that lightning in the cover art got me thinking...

Can an Incarnation enter into a territory that isn't their own? If so does it carry similar repercussions as entering their own territory?

On totally different line of thought; the lavender coloring brings to my mind the Lirial territory (not sure if that's simply a subconscious correlation with Leah, the lavender color and her territory). Is there a Lirial Incarnation? Or are they to smart to get sucked into that kinda position?

Regardless, awesome cover art, awesome quick releases on the novels and thanks for the short stories to tide us greedy ' B's ' over until the 3rd book gets here. You're an awesome person and a amazing writer. Have fun at your thing (convention?) tomorrow bro!!

P.S. - When do we get the next book? ;) You know the one with Alin's sister wielding the serrated meat cleaver as long as Simon's sword and wearing the Jason mask? ;)

Reply
harlequin
4/9/2014 11:19:17 am

In book 2, Valin enters Endross after Simons second attempt to slow him down.
And presumablely yes there should be a Lirial incarnation because there were 10 Hanging trees as of Book 1. The only territories' incarnation not sealed by them was Elysia.
