You'll never reach Monarch otherwise ;P. (jk)

It was a great book on a bad day for me though, I'll have to go through it like 3-5 more times on better days. Had some drama with family which unfortunately meant I couldn't fully enjoy it.

So, pure madra is whitish-blue, and there is a WoW stating that pure madra is actually human madra (but humans named it pure) and Suriel states that when humans are in an Iteration, it's connection to the Way gets stronger, and the Way is described as textured blue, sooooo, (just speculating) the Way is high-density pure madra generated by humans being in an Iteration.

The book was awesome! But now I have to wait again (hopefully not long). I have binge read Savage Divinity and Reincarnation of the Strongest Sword God and have to wait on weekly chapters of those too now :(

I know I've been reading done also on wuxia and gravity tales. Haven't started those two yet. Immortal and Dual cultivation and peerless battle spirit are also good. I only got into them because of this series. And while they are good stories they don't hold up to WillWights ability to put a story together. Maybe something is lost in translation. Idk

In wuxia illI suggest people to try
A Will Eternal., My disciple died yet again,
But for the sake of ur sanity do not start or read tales of demons and gods.
I cannot stress this enough
The story is amazing but the author has a history of losing interest for the last year or more he is releasing one chapter per month . That is one wuxia length chapter per month

Just finished Underlord, as we get farther into the series I get more and more confused how the sage of the endless sword died in book one. After seeing the things the Akuras can do (even while veiled) how was that even remotely possible? I just reread ghostwater, is there a hint dropped in the book about this particular plothole that might not be a plothole.

its been implied that there is a seal over the whole of sacred valley ,
likely connected to mount samsara and due to the presence of the labyrinth (it might be the main entrance) , which limits the level of anyone above gold.
at least that what will told me when i raised the same doubt after reading soulsmith.
till date i still cannot totally let it go, though
he might explain/invent something in uncrowned as orthos and jai long are there now.

Actually will has said that the sages death was intentionally improbably and that a larger story in in play. I for one can't wait to find out what it is

Ian

He was poisoned multiple times (including in his sleep), swarmed by Jades, and they still barely managed to kill him.

If I remember correctly, Yerin mentions that the Sword Sage had a Steelborn Iron body, which we know is really strong but does not regenerate or resist poisons the way Lindon's Bloodforged Iron body does.

It's actually more believable to me that the Sword Sage was killed by Jades, because to him they would be completely beneath his notice. There was no reason for him to have his guard up in the Sacred Valley, and we know that he explicitly came there to give Yerin a safe place to advance for a bit (if I recall correctly, Yerin states that in the first book somewhere). Add to that the fact that they threw the back-stabbing book at him, and it's entirely believable to me that a bunch of ants was able to take down a lion.

I mean, isn't that basically the plot of the entire series so far? Lindon is almost always incredibly underpowered compared to the people he's fighting, and he makes up the difference by tricking and cheating as much as he can. It doesn't matter how much power you get; if taken unawares with your weaknesses accurately targeted, anyone can be defeated.

Chris

Yes but, this is the equivalent of being swarmed by, literally ants, annoying, yes, painful, maybe, but deadly? Basically never. From what I have understood about Sages so far.

For perspective, Lindon and Yerin are absolute prodigies and therefore can punch probably 2 levels above their weight class, where most people would be considered geniuses if they could manage even 1 level. This is what makes them extraordinary. However a jade killing someone at Sage level is punching approximately 6-7 times their weight class(honestly more since levels at that point are not linear, instead more like multiplicative, like highly, highly multiplicative like 10,000 times their weight class lol).

Something incredibly monumental had to have happened to the Sage of Endless Swords before this for anything like what happened to actually happen. Like he had to have been (SPOILER) Almost at the brink of death like Yerin was right before her advancement in the latest book.

Honestly from what we've read so far from book 1 to 6(to me at least) it is not even remotely imaginable that a a group of jades killed a Sage. So I am eagerly awaiting the explanation that will hopefully come in book 7 or 8 :)

Chris
3/1/2019 04:43:49 pm

I don't know agree because of everything the other Chris said but also because jades were fighting his remnant, poisoned or not his remnant should have ripped through the entire valley and back, I don't actually think he's dead. Everything yerin said about him was him saying the path of a sacred arts user was only wide enough for one. So I think he staged his death somewhere yerin was away from big shots and could start her own path. If the jai patriarch can fake his own death in front of a underlord that has the best senses then a SAGE could fake it in front of a couple of jades and lower.

Diego
3/1/2019 04:57:32 pm

I think the sword sage was injured within the labryant, and that those particular jades had something they got from inside which resulted in his death. Recently I've been considering that he may not be dead.

3/3/2019 09:23:48 pm

It makes a lot of sense if you read the book.......the heavens glory school had access to the labyrinth. You know where the archstone etc is?? The poison used was said to be from that labyrinth and is why it worked on an archlord.

Random_user
3/8/2019 03:41:59 pm

I couldn’t find where it said it was from the labyrinth, it just said poison, and I have a hard time believing jades could find a potion to kill someone on the same level as Akura Charity.

Joey
3/2/2019 06:11:51 am

SPOILERS

There are multiple scenes which allude to the Sage of the Endless sword being alive. Yerin is treated by both Ziel and Akura charity as if she was acting in the interests of the Sage, Akura is a sage herself and directly refers to the Sage in the present tense in Ghostwater. At the end of Underlord, all Akura Mercy has to do to alert Akura Malice/Charity that she gives in is to think about it. No overt sign was given (unless you count almost dying). Yerin the character who knows sages the best arguably (besides other sages) while thinking about lying to a sage thinks there is no point because "she is a sage she knows" Akura Mercy moves back from Eithan when she thinks might be lying about her mother as if that alone could cause his death. Ambient energy is the difference between the Valley and say the heart of Akura territory, power begets power. This makes it harder for people to advance but would do nothing for the power of someone currently alive. If all you had to do to kill most ppl of higher rank was slip them poison then every person of higher rank should be dead since they almost all treat those lesser than them like shit (and those are the ppl who cook their meals)

See the issue only escalate
It was hard to believe the reason as a seal on sacred valley provided by WILL , on the second book itself on seeing eithans power.
The power sealing factor had to be atleast gold ,as there is historic record of people (also maybe elder whisper) at that stage and even the jai sibling and orthos are ok
(Don't know the exact level of the seal as lie Marduk was not affected much by it to the point of looking for a fight with all 4 dredgods , whose nest/home the valley is supposed to be,but the seal might not work on him since he has abidan level power, also the 4 dreadgods killed a generation of monarchs , so damn Marduk had power and the worse luck)
Now even if the sage was injured in the laybrinth(unlikely as the sage would know about its concequconse of summoning dreadgods or maybe the seal protected the aura from leaking outside the valley so he went inside) and poisoned to death , that still only kills him what about his remanant .

The poisoning also doesn't make much sense , I mean he was an uncrowned tattoo holder meaning the 8th strongest in his generation at least on cradle.
Unless the poison was from the labyrinth, but such a potential poison should have killed the Jade's just by looking at it.
Coming to the remnant
Yerin might be able to fight a level or 2 above her level but that's atleast 3 level above her , also the 2 level difference is for normal sacred artist not a Sage who likely can fight above his level too.not to mention an uncrowned
Even if the seal was limiting his raw power the remanant would still have his sword techniques and skills, after all he was a sage he created his own path ,(like how a skilled gamer with a beginner character is still better than a newcomer)

The being alive might make sense if not for the whole remnant part but who knows maybe a sage is able to split his soul in parts or create an artificial remnant

Even if will wrote himself in a corner or has some conniving master plan it doesn't matter as the writer is the literal god of his story and he can find/invent the solution for this problem.

Personally I would like him to be alive and train yerin for the uncrowned tournament.but that creates a whole host of problems primary being that the sage would take yerin under him again and he is a wonderer .

Maahn
3/4/2019 12:34:06 am

In theory, it would be cool if he was still alive. But I'm pretty sure Will has stated multiple times here, on Discord and Reddit, that the sword sage is definitely dead, that the suspicious nature of it was definitely intentional writing on his part not writing himself into a corner, and that eventually we will learn the truth about his death

Chris
3/4/2019 08:38:49 pm

This comment is more a reply to Avi Nash, though I can't seem to reply directly too him sadly.

One thing of note is that Li Murkuth and the Sword Sage are at roughly the same power level. This is confirmed by Will, you can check on the abidan archive quote page.

The Second important point is how powerful/ how much consciousness a remnant can have. (*SPOILER*) At the end of Underlord we learn that there is a Monarch Remnant, who definitely has consciousness. Therefore I think it is reasonable to assume that a Sages Remnant can have some level of thought as well, such as holding back just enough against its disciple in the hopes to bond with her.

This is also slightly alluded to if you reread Unsouled, as there are multiple mentions of the Remnant waiting for Yerin, and of Yerin saying the Remnant is "only for her".

All that being said my personal guess is the same as Maahn, The Sword Sage is dead.I also believe that that what really did him in was something in the labriynth. It most likely either destroys or disrupts soulfire, which is what made his own body only as powerful as say a Truegold. As we all know from Lindon's example, if an Iron can kill a Highgold, why couldn't a bunch of Jades kill a Truegold, given the right circumstances.

Dude
3/11/2019 04:11:57 pm

Also, in blackflame, when the jai patriarch grabbed the archstone, he sadi that he would have lost his mind if he weren't an underlord, which makes me think that all of the items have at least some defense on them.

Jonathan
3/2/2019 07:28:07 pm

Not really necessary but *spoilers*: I think that there is a lot about the death of the sword sage that is interesting to consider.

1: sages don’t take disciples. But he did. 2: he died leaving a remnant. Unless there some technique where he could fake a remnant AND put In memories i think he’s actually dead.

3: and I’m doubling up here *spoilers*. I’m 90% sure part of being a sage is having a cause. A line in Underlord heavily hints that sages have caused to fight for. Yerin said that she encountered redmoon hall acolytes when traveling with her master, without knowing the name, all the time. So.... my guess is , and I’m certain I’m fairly close, sage was already dying, his cause had to do with redmoonhall, or all factions that worship the dreadbeasts, and when he saw yerin he saw an opportunity to take something he’d been fighting against and turn it into the ultimate weapon against it. At his end he went to a place where he knew she would be challenged but able to get his remnant and eventually.

4: all of that aside I still feel like he died on purpose so she would claim his remnant.

5: last two bits: or he wasn’t the actual sage of endless swords.

I just think that to be a Sage, you need to become a lord power while forging your own path. I mean, it seems like all of the sages never had teachers.
It would explain why Sages (almost) never take apprentices.
(Just a guess)

Avinash
3/3/2019 03:00:55 am

Regarding ur point 1~4 no matter how he died or how close he was to death or how badly injured/poisoned.
It all ends with death after that his remanant was free of all that and should still be a remnant of an uncrowned sage.

Regarding point 5
Multiple people have recognized yerin as the sages disciple without being told , including the sage of silver heart.
A person who could fool them even so long after death must at least be above their level and not below.

Gutts
3/3/2019 08:35:09 pm

This! I’m also trying to figure out how someone with so much power got done in by that asshole priest from book 1. By poison no less, iirc. The way Will describes Charity, it just seems incomprehensible for someone of that level to get the drop on him.

My personal thoughts are that the Sage either A) Ascended beyond Cradle and left behind a shadow of a remnant for Yerin to advance from, or B) the Jades in the Sacred Valley really did get their hands on a high level poison from the labyrinth, which not only could defeat the Archlord, but also damaged and weakened his remnant. I find the first to be more likely, as it is something along the lines of what happened to Northstrided, since everyone thought he died but he really ascended.

@Gavin: something along the lines of what happened to Northstrided, since everyone thought he died but he really ascended.

Northstrider hasn't ascended, he's still on Cradle. He's just anti-social so everyone *thinks* he's dead.

qbanjackson
3/6/2019 07:35:51 am

Remember in the first book Suriel references that Ozriel died and came back. I wonder if he is following that same path and ascended cradle. Not related but I also think Yerin will place in the tournament and get tutored by the Sage of red faith. 2 bodies with 2 Sage masters seems like a good plot twist. She hates her blood shadow and the Sage of endless sword hated blood shadows so it would be pretty interesting for this to happen. The clone would be her complete opposite so to speak

Just a few things I want to point out in response to earlier comments. if the akura family did go to the trouble of making a seal on sacred valley, then it doesn't make sense that they would just leave the door unlocked to the people in there. also, the sword sage could have done something similar to the jai Patriarch, faking his own death, and it also mentioned that the Patriarch created a fake remnant; the sword sage could have also made a fake remnant, even one with memories that the sage would have. in short, I think that the sword sage is still alive, and may have actually transcended cradle, or at least got acces to the Way like Northstrider did.

Michael
3/7/2019 10:02:02 am

I think its extremely unlikely to think that Northstrider ascended. He is clearly still interacting with Cradle and that is one of the things the Abidan specifically looks out for. Its certainly possible that the Sword Sage died/ascended and left behind a remnant, but he most definitely "died" as Will has stated that before.

I've now stayed up way too late finishing this for the first time, though I can promise it will be far from the last. This one felt different than the others, the...insight, to borrow a word, is appreciated. It gives a depth of character beyond what the drive for greater power has given us thus far and it was needed even though I didn't realize that before. And good underlord I've been waiting for a glimpse at the character at the ending for three books. Despite that it took me by surprise. The best kind. Well done Mr. Wight, this one humbly requests you to write faster so he can read Uncrowned.

Idk about you, but what I loved the most was that none of these insights really came as a surprise, after rereading the series these last 2 weeks in anticipation, I said to myself after reading about Yerin and Lindon through 6 books, these thoughts, emotions, and actions... This is exactly what I felt drove them to where they are. Yet at the same time, could see how they would look to the other reasons they tried as acceptable. It is utterly amazing to me, that the idea that a person hides the truth of what they do behind a more "honorable" struggle is what I personally and I am sure many others do every single day... Hits you right in the feels man.

@chris
In response to your response
Yeah I get the difficulties in direct replys.
1.I seem to be missing a few things like Marduk and sage being on same level , granted he traveled through a gate not not the WAY proper so he might be lower than 1star Titan or whatever.
2. The reason yerin said that the remnant was for her only is because it's her path
It's known that the best remnant is one from your own path and only 2 people are on the path of endless sword.and one died.
3. I wholly belive the sage is dead , but on reading some of the comments by the people that the sage could very well have ascended , after all there is a someone else who ascended from the same location . And while he was ascending he left behind a portion of his soul as a remnant or he was attacked during ascension and that caused a major portion of his power to dissipate.
4.some one said iron killing a gold
Lindon only did that due to hunger binding.
5. Regarding kelsa despite have a shitty iron body , she could still advance cause there are many other ways or elixers.
Like the one from 8 man empire who became a gold when she was a child.
Or as the previous lord of dawn breaker said elixers that can make u a gold from iron instantly.

Just throwing this out here, this is my comment and so is the one in reply to Ian, that is it. I am not the Chris you are looking for I believe. I did read through the other Chris's responses to your comments though in trying to figure out what you all were talking about.

One thing I can way in on about about your 4th point. The jades got the poison from the labyrinth, seems likely that it is at least in the same category of power as a hunger binding.

I was literally staring at my kindle counting down until release. The book was a.) amazing, truly a great read b.) entirely too short. I was done in just about two and a half hours. Also... double cliffhanger, really? (not going to give too many details for spoiler reasons, but for clarification the epilogue is a cliffhanger after the end of the main story, which is also a cliffhanger). The suspense is killing me, I need Uncrowned, and I needed it at 2:30am this morning.

Hello, i'm not sure you will read this, but I have truly enjoyed both the Cradle series and the Traveler's Gate series. I also plan to check out the other two and look forward to what they might entail. I read the newest addition to the Cradle series in about five hours, and I can't wait for the next one. Keep up the good work, you are the only author who I seem to enjoy every single book series you make.

Cryptic spoilers in this comment. You have been warned.

I was first very sad to hear about Orthos leaving, and wondered why you'd get bored of such a fun character. But then I was so happy to see him in the last scene. Well played Will. You have successfully toyed with my emotions.

Will, you said you kept the beta reader response low-key because you didn't want to hype up the book too much. But after reading it I don't think there's any amount of hype could have prepared me. It's easily be new favorite book of the series.

There were a lot of different POVs and advancements to consider in this book, and I can imagine it took a lot of effort to juggle them all. I just want to say that I think you did an excellent job tying them all together in a way that felt very natural.

Something just occurred to me. If Kelsa is going to become a major player, surely she will have to start advancing. But she is in Sacred Valley. And the area around Sacred Valley is a wasteland of poison and death madra, and it took a thousand mile cloud, which she does not have, to get Lindon, Yerin, and Eithan out of that area in a timely fashion.

Kelsa is a light/dream path sacred artist. Is there even going to be a Remnant of the correct, compatible madra for her to take in to go to Lowgold before she reaches parts of civilization where even being Jade at her age is unusually weak?

Reply
Chris
3/2/2019 06:05:54 pm

And remember her foundations have to be shit because she doesn't even have a specific iron body, because Lindon didn't even know it was a thing, he (and everyone in sacred Valley) thought it was just an generic iron body. I honestly hope that she doesn't some how catch up to Lindon in anyway shape or form. Get to Gold maybe OK. But even to the blackflame empire normal not large backing people find it hard to advance to gold so she should find it even harder then them.

I guess she could find some treasure, but that feels to plot armoire. Orthos might be able to help a little but he's on a combat path so how much would he know about her path (same goes for jai longs info). I guess it would just invalidate all of the books and lindons work if she catches up at all. Butttttt in Will I trust so well see what he decides to do.

I would even forgive the plot armor and unnatural acceleration if it meant she was going to join the "main group"
Right now the main characters are Yerin (stabs things), Lindon (blows things up), Mercy (shoots things), and Eithan (dodges things and annoys people, also strategizes). It would be really interesting to have someone from a not entirely combat oriented Path join them, and the Path of the White Fox specializes in illusions. Someone whose first instinct maybe isn't to hurl themselves into combat to train train train because they won't benefit from that as much.

Chris
3/2/2019 06:49:58 pm

I don't disagree with the rounding out but in a world/universe where everyone has hammers most problems are fixed by smashing things. But I guess my problem with her catching up is that it's been said how incredibly rare people like yerin, mercy and Ethan are (their advancement lv for age) and the fact that lindon caught up and is keeping up its already crazy enough, but he's worked tooth and nail for it and during all this time his sister hasn't evolved at all, that would make her catching up feel even worse imo. Idk I guess it would ruin the flavor of this group is truly pushing the frontier of advancement if a minor side character can catch up (minor in page time) idk even mercy has the smallest amount of interaction with lindon (tho I think the next book with help build the bonds of trust there, same for yerin and Ethan. Ie making the group trust fully) I just don't see how it fits into the universe build so far. In the end I'm just another reader and I'm sure I'll like what even will decides to do.

Madeline
3/2/2019 09:01:31 pm

At the very least, she has survived being hunted by Jades for at least a year. Possibly a year and a half to two years at this point. Given that intense dedication to bettering oneself seems to be a defining trait of all prodigies, I would say she probably at least has potential to grow.

Madeline
3/3/2019 10:35:50 am

And after rereading the relevant books again... advancing to Jade involves getting your madra to spiral. Advancing to Gold requires absorbing a Remnant or... something else, I forget how Lindon did it, but Lindon's path also involves contracting with a sacred beast which I am assuming Kelsa will not do until it proves otherwise. Advancing to Truegold requires lots of training, or a pill of the type that Eithan gave them (and if Lindon's sister turns up at anything lower than Truegold, I honestly suspect Eithan might be tempted to help her as well because Eithan's a manipulative jerk and helping Lindon's sister is another string tied to Lindon to counteract the Akura family influence) but the advancement to Underlord... I got the impression that the reason Lindon and Yerin soared through the first two steps was not because they were prodigies, but because they had been coached. By an Underlord, and by Dross. And now Mercy has taught Lindon and Yerin the fast track to the third part of advancing to Underlord.

It might not actually take Kelsa that long to advance. I'm assuming Iron to Jade takes so long in Sacred Valley because they don't KNOW about the spiralling thing, and getting to Jade in Sacred Valley is, like Copper to Iron, simply a matter of collecting enough sheer madra quantity to make the jump rather than doing it the "right" way. Which means doing it the "right" way might be faster. If Orthos can simply tell her that... that in and of itself would go a long way towards catching her up. And once she reaches Lowgold, helping her becomes a way for the Empire to exert influence on the Blackflame who is now on the Akura family's Uncrowned team. The rate limiting factor is going to be how fast can she get from Jade to Lowgold, in the middle of a wasteland that doesn't have Remnants that are compatible with her madra.

Asterion
3/3/2019 03:33:06 pm

My only problem with that is that her Iron body is crap. It's been mentioned that crap Iron bodies can stymie a sacred artist's growth. If she advances I would expect her to peak at Lowgold or Highgold at the most, unless someone like Eithan intervenes in a major way.

Johnny
3/4/2019 10:54:07 am

catching up would not be much of an issue, Will has already opened it up with talk of all the elixirs. The Children of Monachs are golds al most overnight.

I don't think that is what will happen, but With Three Underlords, With and family is now probably the second strongest and with the treasures from Night Wheel maybe even the richest.

Kobin
3/4/2019 01:14:03 pm

What about the dream fox thing from the first book? perhaps she can make a pact with it like Lindon did with Orthos?

(different) Chris
3/4/2019 09:04:00 pm

So I know this may seem odd, but does an Iron body/Remenant or Spirit bond truly mater?

We were told they do in the first couple books, that it was the only feasible way to make yourself stronger, and you needed it for your foundation. However then we get to Ghostwater and Underlord. In these two books there are multiple mentions by powerful people that do not seem to coincide with that knowledge.

It seems like with enough resources the only first true point you are stymied on is insight into Underlord. In Ghostwater we first read about Ziel talking about a single pill that can literally do just that.

This idea is further enforced to me when The elite of this world talk about advancement from copper to Truegold. The way Sages seem to see it, is that everything is just consuming enough power to get to the point where you can open a soul space, create soulfire, and eventually remake your body with it.

Again all of which can apparently be done simply with ONE pill. I can't help but feel that this has been set-up through the last couple books, perhaps specifically FOR Kelsa so that there is a way to see her able to at least make the jump to Lord.

(didn't see Johnny's post before I typed this, this is basically just a more explained version of what he said lol )

Chris(Another one)
3/11/2019 04:26:13 pm

Remebmer, you don't have to find a remnant to get to gold. and your right, I would definitly like it if she could join main group, even if it makes no sense.

Asterion
3/5/2019 10:12:21 pm

I see what you're getting at, but I disagree. So far Monarch is the highest we've even seen. Mercy, the daughter of over such Monarch, wasn't Gold overnight. Even Harmony was still a Truegold as a guy in his teens (don't remember exactly but doubt he is past 19) and he was considered a favored child. Unlike Lindon, Kelsa does not have the advantage of being an empty slate when he truly starts training in the Sacred Arts. Her foundations are pretty weak, given she is from an environment where Jade is the peak. One thing these elixirs have in common is that the elites in the world know how to use them, and don't seem to use them before their children are ready for them. This is why we've only seen one truly prodigal child so far (the princess mentioned throwing a fit to join the tournament). I think it's too late for Kelsa to truly advance in the way Lindon has. And honestly I doubt Will is going to have Lindon and Yerin bleed so much to get where they are to just hand Kelsa a pill so she can catch up. As many advantages as Lindon has been granted, he's worked and suffered for each and every one of them.

I’m not sure Kelsa’s iron body is crap for a non combat role. It is compared to the main characters so far. Also, Eithan for example has not bonded a remnant and neither did Lindon which would indicate to me advancing to gold and really all levels of gold a matter of absorbing enough madra and condensing it. We only have the scene where she advances to iron to go off but it might be her iron body is perfectly suited for the path of the white fox. Lindon’s and Yerin’s iron body process was very intense because they needed very special iron bodies for recovery (because of blackflame) and strength for the endless storm. Lindon did almost claw out his eyes during her advancement, so that I think indicates at least that it s suitable to her path. Just my thoughts on it.

Sad Truth
3/6/2019 07:01:04 pm

It's pretty much crap, at least Eithan said anyone who gets an iron body simply through madra accumulation will be lucky to reach lowgold, highgold would require an absolute miracle, and truegold being simply a dream.

Come to think of it, that might also account for why no one advances past jade in sacred valley, without a real Iron body and no knowledge of how to bond with a remnant, their all doomed as far as advancement goes basically.

qbanjackson
3/7/2019 09:16:57 pm

Eithan’s raindrop body was created basically by chasing stuff around. He did say not all methods are extreme like what Yerin and Lindon went through. Maybe the way they cycle early morning is not only for cycling but also prepares their bodies. I mean you could be right but I don’t think we know enough to say they have crap iron bodies. Just because they are deficient in some areas of martial arts does not mean they are deficient in all aspects. Just saying they could totally have an iron body sufficient for their path to progress past gold if they could accumulate enough madra.

Scott
3/8/2019 03:36:43 pm

I think you are missing the greatest part of this arc. If Kelsa advances, what will be her gold sign? Seeing how her clan is focusing on following illusion/dream foxes, could her gold sign be spectral fox ears and tails? While that would be hilarious I love all the gold signs and contracts that are associated with each path.

Reply
qbanjackson
3/8/2019 03:46:30 pm

Gold signs are cool but not everyone has one. Lindon and Eithan for instance. It seems the gold signs are results of absorbing a remnant which is the easiest but not the only way to accumulate enough madra to reach gold.

Scott
3/9/2019 06:42:23 am

I am not sure if a gold sign does require absorbing a remnant. Lindon's black eyes might be considered the gold sign for the path of the black flame. The gold signs of green wings don't mention a remnant either but the books may not have explored that path enough to definitively say. Eithan and Lindon's pure mandra path may be an exception to the gold sign or maybe the path hasn't been formalized enough to produce a gold sign. It seems like they are both still figuring it out.

qbanjackson
3/9/2019 03:06:28 pm

I think the gold sign for blackflame is a tail. I seem to recall reading that somewhere and the statues around the capital would support that. But Not sure about the eyes. I was I took it was that happened from using blackflame madra which is why he doesn’t have them all the time. I seem to recall it said in the book that goldsigns come from remnants but I could be wrong maybe only pure paths don’t have one. I have been known to misremember things

Jonathan
3/11/2019 12:19:54 am

Gold signs, seem to be an inherent representation of using aura to accumulate Madra. it would be interesting to know if sacred beasts started out with pure madra also, it hasn't been explicitly stated as far as I know. However, if sacred beasts do not then aura or madra from them seems to follow their genetic lines. Black dragons had one genetic line for blackflame, which is why the original path of blackflame had something different from Lindon. Since Lindon contracted with Orthos he follows the turtle's genetic representation of blackflame. Will hasn't explicitly shown us someone who has made it all the way to Truegold with a remnant or a contract. Kelsa's sign will be determined by her eventual path through gold.

That said, the pure madra path that Lindon and Eithan follow, has the same type of representation. What sign would a human get from his own genetic path??? Pure madra is the base human foundation, as such, any humans who make it to Gold, already carry their sign, so there is no change.

I meant to say "...Truegold without a remnant or a contract..."

While there are several good animes in my opinion most animes made from books (not all) are... less than good in quality. That's the same with any movie made from books, really. The only two exceptions I can think of is The Shawshank Redemption and the first Harry Potter movie. And both of those was because the books was short (one was simply a short story).

I suspect that an anime simply couldn't do the books justice.

The Arelii are foreigners (Cassius and Eithan anyway). Blondes in a country of brunettes. No surprise then that their naming conventions would be different. "Arelius" is rather Romanesque, as opposed to the Oriental naming conventions of the natives.

Will has mentioned before that, (paraphrasingg) while most people we interact with are Asian-like in culture and appearance, the Arellius family is European-like. Remember, their homeland is on the other side of the world. I imagine it has to do with that cultural difference.

I don't mean to come across as sarcastic or rude when is say this; it is probably the exact same way you can use a scythe to cut wheat in a field, or you can cut someones head off with it.

Life madra is a tool which is generally used for growth/healing, but as we see in the fights if you manipulate it away from a persons body in someway, your obviously killing them.

So
I just found out abidan archives.
And regarding MARDUK

Will confirmed that he is at sage level max.
So it begets a question
Why was he confident enough to want to challenge the dreadgods , i mean they even killed of monarchs
So what gave him the confidence.

Li Markuth (whence "Marduk"?) never, IIRC, mentioned the Dreadgods. He might not have been aware of their putative connection to Sacred Valley. Why assume that he thought he could defy them?

Li Markuth did indeed mention the Dreadgods. He had asked his summoners if they had "returned home" yet, and stated that he would like to test himself against them. Are we sure Li Markuth was only a Sage? He had ascended beyond Cradle hadn't he? If he was powerful enough to get off world, which even Northstrider has yet to achieve, wouldn't he be stronger than even a Monarch? That would make more sense to me because Monarch is the furthest we've seen anyone advance so far and it would make sense for Li Markuth to want to test himself against the greatest powers he knows of on Cradle (dreadgods).

Just found the Abidan Archive as well. Looks like Li Markuth was an Archlord. Avinash's question is a good one. Some have theorized the Dreadgods were weaker in Li's day or that Li Markuth had learned something in his time outside of Cradle that gave him an edge past his advancement level. Maybe we'll just have to read and find out.

@Asterion: I just went back and checked, and you're right. I'd not gone back far enough in my review of Unsouled, so I missed that bit. Thanks for the correction.

Markuth call's them "the Four Beasts", not "the Dreadgods", so perhaps they hadn't become as corrupted when he left as they are "now". Though he says that the mere existence of humans in Sacred Valley demonstrates that the Beasts haven't returned, so they obviously weren't benign even back in his day.

So I dunno:-).

wait. if the arelius family once had a monarch, then why aren't they, like, super powerful? they should still control a lot of land, even if there monarch recently died. also, I now know the reason why Eithan is so overpowered: he received training form the monarch! or, at least, that would explain a lot. also, in blackflame, there was a brief mention of very powerful trees. I want to hear more about O.P. Trees!

"Did the heavens open up and provide you with a link?" One of the last things your wrote in your first blog. My wife and I are rereading the series and last night Lindon said "And the heavens opened up" It made me giggle ;p

Eithan is a Monarch. Calling it now.
The monarch of the cloud court believes she can veil herself properly to be seen as an underlord
The aurelius family had an underlord that disappeared just like eithan
Eithan when he battles the redmoon hall guy the 2nd rims states he does not need to hold back anymore because he is veiled from the sages
In underlord eithan states that it doesn't matter "If you have endless madra" imply he does
Most compelling of all is Mercy states that eithan has done a surprisingly good job designing Lindon for higher levels. How could eithan know how to do that if he wasn't above underlord himself?

Great theory! didn’t Eithan have a scene where he thought a comment about the monarch from his homeland and something to the effect “if sage is still alive....” that would mean if he is a monarch or sage he would not be the one from across the sea.

Well in retrospect, Eithan also had the Aurelius library, which I would definitely say he got from the Aurelius Monarch. I can believe he would have such knowledge with the library in hand, it's like having thousands of dream tablets all in one.

Also, I have no trouble believing that Eithan already has a plan for himself, but I don't think he has enacted it. He was trying to get companions to make the same journey. I don't think he is higher than Underlord. Once it is done, he will likely leave cradle for wherever Ozriel is.

Still doesn't explain why he keeps having to veil his true powers like in the battle with the redmoon hall underlord.

Regarding eithan
In blackflame cassius said that the aurelius family artist swore that when he arrived 6 years ago he was not far past 30 , meaning at least 30+, underlord is around 2 years from blackflame so eithan is around 40 now , but he tells yerin that he is 34🤔
