Uncrowned: September 26th!

Did you guys not know that I put out my pumpkins, skeletons, and cobwebs on September 27th? I call it "Scary Day."

I can see now how it might have been misleading to suggest that the book will be released before Halloween, but to be fair, this is before Halloween.

The Uncrowned pre-order is now live and with it the official release date, so go and pre-order! ...if you want to!

Otherwise, follow this and my other sites as the pre-order period unfolds and we gradually release news and content in celebration!

Hey, congratulations! There's a simple way to keep reading during the ceremony: ask the officiant to read something you have prepared, and just had him or her a copy of the book.

They'll start getting suspicious about seven or eight hours in, but just assure them it will be over in a couple of hours and keep going.

A couple of reasons, but the main reason we were releasing on the first was for Kindle Unlimited ranking, which doesn't seem to have gone up all that much. So it might not be worthwhile.

What we THINK is that by releasing NOT on the first, we will be able to get higher on the rankings overall, which should be more valuable. But who knows? We might go back to the first of the month next time!

I'm really not sure; your local tax shouldn't affect the displayed price of the ebook as far as I know.

For what it's worth, where I am there's a 15% VAT rate which lines up with what I'm seeing, at least. On the best-sellers list, Uncrowned is displayed for me at $6.99, and $8.04 on the product page (only while logged out, interestingly; pricing in both locations matches at $8.04 if I'm logged in).

There are hidden elders! The most interesting of them, in my opinion, is a Monarch whose power and crimes were so great that they justified the building of a one-man Monarch prison. It still exists in Cradle, but is it still occupied? Who knows?

Can this be a reference to Elder Whisper? We know he is able to see the strings of fate and in the end of Unsouled we learn he is aware of the Abidan, thought he does not know what happened at the tournament.

“As the members of the Heaven’s Glory School excavate their ancient tomb, a five-tailed snowfox the size of a man waits nearby. He is soundless, scentless, his presence masked to both sight and spirit. He is an ancient sacred beast, one of the original inhabitants of this valley, and he is only seen when he wishes to be. He has followed the Unsouled Lindon since the intervention of Suriel, the Phoenix, Sixth Judge of the Abidan Court. Though he does not remember the events prior to her temporal reversion, he has noticed the effects of her involvement and believes that Lindon is favored by heaven. He watches the two young sacred artists leave the valley, and for the first time in centuries, he experiences hope. Maybe these children, blessed by the heavens, will save the valley from the Dreadgods’ return.” We also know he has lived for many centuries, is imprisoned by the Wei clan yet treated with honor, and knows of the Dreadgods. It also states that he is one of the original inhabitants of the valley. That means he was alive long before the curse was placed on sacred valley(Stops then from advancing above gold) and before the original Blackflame Empire fell. In conclusion: Elder Whisper is a sacred beast hundreds of years old(we don’t know how long Archlords live but Will started it was for a long time), he survived the original Dreadgod attack, he can sense the Abidans influence, and he is imprisoned but still treated with respect(even London doesn’t know why Elder Whisper is imprisoned and it makes sense for him to have done it since we know he is more powerful than the other Elders), we also know that escaping is no problem for him considering he got out already. I think it would make sense for him. And with Orthos now in Sacred Valley maybe Elder Whisper will make an appearance. I guess we’ll see! Let me know if you have any other theories.

It could be true but unlikely.
First a clarification he is likely hundreds of thousands of years old as even jaishou was hundreds of years old and the attack on valley was well before the dragons ruled the empire.

I do remember Lindon saying something about an area in the labyrinth that even Elder Whisper was unable to enter but that may be due to his powers being sealed.

The one monarch prison being sacred valley is an interesting notion and would make sense why other powers know it's forbidden to go there without knowing why.

Also if u take the death matches as canon the abidan are able to kidnap and manipulate memories of North strider .
But suriel reversed the time of cradle so there was no memory in the first place so whisper won't remember.

The only problem I find with this is suriels presence not locating him as a candidate when asked for fighters/powerhouse

Don't say he is sealed or not fighting or in weakend state.
Ieaving aside north strider and sha miara
It located the girl in 8man empire who is a Herald and was drunk and asleep.
But couldn't located a monarch even a sealed one a stone throws away.

I agree he is more powerful than any in the valley but in his current state not above gold or else he would have come out to stop markuth or have prevented the current condition of Wei clan being pursued by the heavens glory

Well there were many Monarchs Suriel didn’t mention. If anything she should have mentioned A Akura Malice considering the whole Sacred Valley belongs to the Akura clan. So I don’t know if she was going based on the nearest Monarch considering she chose Northstrider or Sha Miara. Suriels Presence tells us how far the Ninecloud Court is from Sacred Valley. And I would assume that Malice would be somewhat closer than Nirthstrider or Sha Miara considering it was her territory. Then again they are Monarchs they can get there in an instant so this might not apply. You may be right. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Well the 8man empire as a whole is considered as a monarch and it's much easier to become a herald than a monarch

And I seem to remember the valley being On the border of sha miara and akura territory and NOrthstrider wonders where ever he wants , so it is possible that the presence was showing based on distance or maybe it was showing based on power level or a mix of them both.

Also will mentioned it in a comment about whisper being below markuth (Marduk or whatever , the guy with the bat wings), but I don't remember if he said if it was in his current state or original .

Also I seem to remember that the 8man empire was formed to fight A monarch do u guys think it's the same one that was imPrisoned or someone else ??

It actually makes sense that Whisper might be an imprisoned Monarch.

Given Suriel's foresight, she was probably basing her visions on probable futures. Maybe there was no chance Malice would ever help Lindon, but Sha Miara might. Also, Northstrider and the 8 Man Empire are not bound to a territory, so it's more likely they could be persuaded/hired to help.

Following this logic, a Monarch who was literally next door, but completely unable to act, would not be part of the vision.

Also, even a Monarch-level Whisper would still be inferior to...Markuth? (been awhile for me too)...given that Markuth incurred Suriel's wrath in the first place by returning to Cradle from a higher-level world. It is quite probable that Markuth was stronger than any individual on Cradle.

The Markuth incident actually gives MORE credence to the Whisper-Monarch theory, as it reinforces the idea that the leaders of the Sacred Valley clans were once far more powerful than they are currently. If the former leader of the Li clan was literally too powerful for Cradle, than it makes sense that the rival leader (Whisper) would be at least Monarch level.

Maybe Suriel just showed the Monarchs she thought would inspire Lindon. Not the closest, not the ones that might help, just the ones that Lindon would think were really cool: The one that rules an entire giant kingdom and inherited power from her family, a dream for someone who only got pity from his own family; the one who goes around beating the greatest monsters he can find, a dream for someone who spend their entire life being afraid of anyone with even a little power; and the ones who become greater by banding together, a dream for someone who never had friends, someone who was surpassed and scorned by all his peers.

And after meeting Northstrider we KNOW he would not help a weakling in any way and there is nothing Lindon could give to hire any monarch for even a second.

It's canon that bat wing dude markuth is max Archlord (that's why he had to return vai portal and not decend from heaven like shriek)
Secondly whisper in his current state atleast, is below him

But to all those who favor this remember s sealed monarch would still be a monarch with its centuries of exp and knowledge.

If heaven Flory can raise gold then he certainly can too.

And he said he can't help him as he is a beast not a cultivator

I'd he was a monarch he would know how to transform into human and also how human cultivation work and told him unsouled is nothing.

As the dragon monarch said clearly that madras flows best in human form so it's unlikely whisper became a monarch without learning human cultivation and whatnot

Heck he could have helped creat an exodus as a last resort or given him some symbol of his station to show any other monarch to beg help

Lindon didn't ask Suriel who could save Sacred Valley. He asked her how HE could stop it.

That's important, because if he wanted to know who could stop it, she could have shown him the closest Monarchs, but to make him capable of stopping it... that requires an incentive to grow. So instead of the closest Monarchs, she showed him the ones that were furthest away, or impossible to find. The point wasn't to tell him who to seek as an ally, the point was to motivate him to grow on his own by showing him how big the world was.

As for the content, if you're looking at the book length displayed on the Amazon page, that is not accurate. To my eternal frustration, it's almost never accurate.

In fact, Uncrowned is shorter than Blackflame or Underlord but longer than the others.

But i cant see any of those advantages for an ebook. xD But its ok, now i dont have to sit in front of amazon waiting till i can buy it. =))

Well aside from Blackflame, the others are all close to 300 so it dosnt realy matter. Was just a bit frustrated that i woudnt get a pre read after pre ordering. So i wanted to kick at something and as the price has nearly doubled, it was a good target. Not that it matters, im still buying, right? xD So jea, sry about that. ^_^

I know the feeling as I used to hate books myself. I blame system in schools, they made program of stuff thats really hard to chew.
As if any teenager wants to read Franz bloody Kafka and how he transformed into a COCKROACH!..

It took a long long time to break my misconceptions, nowadays I prefer quality book than a TV series. As a medium it just conveyes so much more and its far easier to connect with characters if written well, but thats just my opinion :).

@Shane I did some digging and found out that Li Markuth was most likely on the level of Archlord. He was not even close to a Monarch, though as Will has said there are other ways out of Cradle.

"Why did Li Markuth make it out of Cradle?
He did not make it to the top of the power scale and then ascend, but he did make it out."

He was close to the Sword Sage in terms of power. And I looked back and saw that Will had mentioned that Whisper was several levels below Markuth which means at most he's an Underlord. This quote is from someone asking about a fight between Markuth and Whisper.

"Elder Whisper might be able to hide and run, if the terms of the battle allow such a thing. But Li Markuth very well might be able to catch him, and if he can, then Li Markuth wins it. He's a level above Whisper."

When I looked even further I saw someone asking about a fight between Eithan and Whisper.

Although one thing I find interesting is that Whisper may be sealed. If he is and he is close to and Underlord while sealed than it might make sense for him to be a Monarch. Another thing is maybe Whispers prison is just a prison within a prison. Maybe the curse on Sacred Valley is his fault and its meant to keep him sealed. It permits the inhabitants to advance to Jade and no further. Effectively sealing the more powerful people that enter. It doesn't allow them to use their full power. Maybe this is how the Sword Sage was killed. Yerin who was only a Jade was able to use her full power but the Sage could only use a fraction. So Whisper is the equivalent to an Underlord while in Sacred Valley but outside when he is unbound he is a Monarch. Do you think its possible that the Valley draws madra from people above Jade or at the peak of Jade stopping them from advancing and weakening the Golds+? Its an interesting theory and I can't wait to find out. Perhaps things will become clearer as we see more of the Orthos/Kelsa story line.

My theory is that the Labrynth sucks up vital aura so that there just isn't enough available in sacred valley to support a gold artist. Similar to how the Blackflame Empire has trouble making underlords. Thus any gold or above going to sacred valley would start leeking madra till they had only jade levels left. like a pressure differential.

If ur theory was true they should have no problems advancing to jade only to gold also they should have known about different iron bodies but they didn't and Jade's are very rare

Sorry but for some reason I can’t seem to reply to ur posts so that they’re in order. But.. I reread Unsouled and I didn’t see any mention of the Heavens Glory Elders mentioned to be Gold @Avinash. I think I know what confused you. The Elders who are Jades have gold sashes while the other Jade students/staff have a purple sash. Maybe that’s what caused you to believe that there are golds in Sacred Valley. However that is untrue and I didn’t see any mention of a Gold Elder.

Will we see more about Kelsa and the "destruction" of the Wei clan or if the blowback is limited to the Shi family about their destruction in Uncrowned? Or do you like to tease us with the limited information available for the next few books like you did at the end of Unsouled?

From the epilogue of underlord it would look like the whole clan , I think kelsa talked about kids back at the place
Also from book 1 I gather that family is very dear to them even the treatment of lindon who was useless in their eyes was good, not ok not bad but good . He had a home , food and protection.

So I think the school would target the clan

I remember when I bought house of blades for $0.99 because of the awesome cover. It had like 3 reviews. I loved it and couldn't wait for crimson vault release. I'm glad you succeed and grow. Happy to pre order your 17th book. Also thank you so much because I discovered Brandon Sanderson after reading travelers trilogy and he is amazing. Keep the hard work and I hope you release the next book before Christmas.

So this isn't directly related to this book, but it seems odd that Eithan wouldn't have progressed to Overlord in the same timeframe that Lindon progresses from Unsouled to Underlord. Is there a reason I missed or do we think Eithan purposefully held back so he could participate in the tournament? There isn't a mention (that I can recall) about him even trying (and/or struggling to progress). Seems odd...thoughts?

I actually thought Eithan had advanced to Overlord between the two fights with Longhook (Skysworn/Ghostwater) and was just keeping it veiled so as not to cause political issues in the empire.. .being as the Emporer was the only Overlord it might have been seen as a bid for power or something.

But given that I feel pretty sure that a Monach (or Sage) would be able to tell if that were the case (and I can't imagine they'd be amused at cheaters), I'm not really sure WHY he had such a easy time with the second fight. Although I suspect that he's now able to see some of the threads of 'fate' and take action based on achieving the best outcome. There was one sentence in Underlord where he specifically refered to someone 'being fated to go over the side'. And I'm sorry I don't care how aware you are of your surroundings, that wouldn't help you know ahead of time where the gate to the Nightwheel Valley would open so that you could be standing next to it.

He had such an easier time because one “no one was watching” which meant he could use his full strength without the empire finding out about his strength or techniques. Long book was also wounded. As for saving that person from falling he probably saw the attack that was aiming for them then saved them. And finally the night wheel valley. I wondered how he knew too, but I bet there was info about the Akura in the Orb he inherited from Ozriel (first patriarch of aurelius)

Regarding eithan

Longhook fight

It's a matter of quantity not quality
If u consider 3 levels of Lords as different purity of madras with purer being stronger
Then longhook and eithan have same quality but with an has an absurd ant of quantity.
He can burn madras like there is no end using high level arts or spells
There is also the fact that he does not have to horde soulfire as he can readily find more material to create some but normal Lords can't do that so they horde it.

Regarding the opening of gate or his sense in general

Think how a dogs smell or a bats hearing works in comparison to a human to us it's absurd how they can smell or hear so wide range so accurately but we cannot
So eithan likely felt the ripples in space/dimensions where the boundary was weak like how u can fell the edges of a door even in the dark due to the draft coming from it.

Or simply think of eithan with all the power of Daredevil without any of his weakness.

I think he held back. As was described, he don't plan to go to the higher realms of cultivation alone and he purposely searched for companions for this way.

It actually showed up on audible for a few days, indicating that it would come out at the same time as the ebook but with the wrong book description (unless we are suddenly switching to a female character named Alex), but then was removed in every location unless you did what I did, which was to add it to my cart (its still there now but continues to show the wrong description)

Hi Will. It's Thursday afternoon here in Australia, and amazon.com.au has Uncrowned listed for pre-order. My Kindle even suggested Uncrowned on my home page to continue the story, but only shows the pre-order option. Thing is, I already pre-ordered and amazon.com.au says it'll be auto delivered as soon as it's available. It's the 26th!

And yes... I'm an addict.
