Skysworn: October 1st

9/1/2017

I was hoping for September 1st, but that ended up being too optimistic. However, I did finish the book last week, so I'll be getting it to beta readers after I return from DragonCon.

All of which means I'm on time for an October 1st release!

There's only two scenarios that might cause a delay:

1.) An actual emergency, like my brother spontaneously combusting again or the Webspawn hatching early from their ten billion eggs and rising to consume the Earth.

2.) The beta readers tell me the book is broken and needs to be significantly rewritten. This has never happened before (I'm the only one who has ever said to me that a book is broken and needs to be rewritten prior to release), but you never know.

I always have to include this clause just in case, but it's not likely to happen.

TL;DR - Skysworn on October 1st!

Thank you for the update, at least now I can stop refreshing and actually get some work done.

I actually think an October release is good news. That means in the space of just over a month I'll be able to binge on Skysworn, The Gordian Knot (shortly after that graduation day) and then Oathbringer.

Anyone have any recommendations of series that are published frequently (multiple times a year)? This year has been my first encounter with this type of fantasy and I'm loving it. I've only found two series though, this one and Schooled in Magic.

Very few authors that I know of publish multiple books in a single series in a year. One a year is usually considered reliably fast. Some, like Seanan McGuire and Brandon Sanderson, will put out multiple books a year but typically across different series.

Some webnovel authors put out enough content to qualify for multiple books a year. Wildbow's stuff is highly recommended by many, though I've not gotten hooked by it yet. The Gods are Bastards not only has a lot of existing content, but tends to have new releases of long chapters at least once a week, often more. A Practical Guide to Evil is similar.

I believe that some of the better-known xianxia / wuxia translations deliver content at an incredibly rapid pace, and are essentially the inspiration for Cradle in the first place. I will defer to other readers for recommendations there, as the few I tried reading were painful to me to try to parse.

He posts them on a forum before publishing? Is this forum public, and if so would you mind telling me which forum?

I thought he had finished the first edit and it was in the hands of beta readers. Unless, of course, you are a beta reader, in which case I am extremely jealous. Either way I am happy to hear that it was enjoyable.

Chris

He once said that he posts them public in a forum, the next time he published a chapter on his blog, and a quick google search later I found it. He takes them down after a while, and changes are nor inclided, as there are some changes tonthe released books. Rigth now the sequel of zero curse is up, but as that is finished I guess he will delete it soon. Here is his profile page:

This comment could not be a more true statement. After reading Joe Abercrombie, the Amazon recommendations led me to the Cradle Series (which I love--can't wait til October!!!!). I also then read House of Blades, which I enjoyed. Terry Brooks has some good series also--his recent books are subpar. If anyone would like recommendations on where to start those--just reply to this extra long reply...did I also mention I can't wait til skysworn comes out???!!!

The sales he gets within a month influences the kind of publicity (and sometimes money, from Kindle Unlimited reads) he gets from Amazon, so starting on the first day of a month is beneficial. That's also the reason he's said he's not doing pre-orders, because those pre-orders count as sales on the day they're made, not the day the book is actually released.

Will Wight, It has come to my attention that your books contain clues as to the whereabouts of my former college roommate's missing eyeball (I need it to resurrect him) and how he actually died. Unfortunately I recently signed an Accord with the forces behind the church that forbids me from interfering with mortals in exchange for them rescinding their restrictions on the practice of necromancy (It was getting irritating killing all those glowing sword waving idiots), so I cannot simply rip the needed information from your head. Thus I will simply take measures to ensure that these books come out without delay. I have already cast a spell upon all of your relatives that will dump several gallons of water on them should they begin to spontaneously combust.
I will be entering the warrens of the Webspawn within the hour. My previous visits have shown me that the eggs are awaiting a pheromone signal from their queen, who i have yet to locate. I have begun work on a ritual array that will absorb and eliminate any such chemical signals from the warrens. If my work is successful the Webspawn will never wake for at least a few centuries. I believe that the Queen can still wake a few in her immediate surroundings, but I mean a few hundred car-sized spiders don't really qualify as an actual emergency do they?

What exactly are the benefits of having a sword glow anyway? Just seems like a great way to ruin a sneak attack.

You know, I wondered about that back during the crusades. So i killed a bunch of them to collect their glowing swords and studied them. Turns out that the reason is just some shoddy enchanting! the enchantments used are supposed to allow the swords to absorb and dispel any magic that it encounters, but since magic exists everywhere the swords are constantly absorbing magic from their surroundings. This causes minor stress on the enchantment and results in the sword releasing waste energy in the form of light. Pretty dumb, since the addition of a few mana storage crystals would have avoided the glow and provided you with a source of mana to use for yourself.

I know, but there is also a fire nation in Naruto, its where the Leaf village is. Clearly naming countries after elements is a thing in manga/amine. I just thought it's funny to have both a fire nation and a blackflame empire as by definition it would also be a fire nation.

1.How do you become a beta reader? Maybe even omega reader?2. In Unsouled how would Yerin have become gold if she didn't harvest her master's remnant. You said that the remnant has to be the same path and willing? How would you find such a remnant
3.How does Heaven Glory even kills the Sword Sage. If a Sage is greater than an Overlord how would some jades kill him. That's like an army of ants trying to destroy a tank by spitting at it( can ants even spit?).

One more question: How many worlds exists in one iteration. For example, if our universe is an iteration then there are possible infinite amount of worlds. However, when you portrayed your iterations we only see one world. Does that mean that an Iteration consists of only one world revolving around the sun? Because when Suriel refers to Cradle it seems like she is only referring to the planet Lindon is on. Kinda implying that cradle is only one planet. But i thought iteration=universe and universes=lots of planets? Im confused!

Will has said that he's not taking new beta readers, and his FAQ page here on the site mentions it too. He's said in the past that they're mostly family or close friends.

Omega reader would be...all of us, technically :D

I believe that Will has said that she would've bonded a Remnant from a similar sword Path. There's been some interesting speculation on what would've happened in that case, but I'm not sure we'll ever really know since it's a moot point by now.

Will has definitely said that there are extenuating circumstances to explain how a bunch of Jades were able to kill the Sword Sage - it wasn't just that they poisoned him and attacked him in his sleep, there was more to it that we will find out later on.

Hi Will, hope Dragoncon is a blast.

Was re-reading Blackflame (again!) in the hope of a September release and was suddenly curious.

I understand that the Hollow Armour would allow Eithan to slip in and out of the boundary formation as Jai Daishou explains it to us, but how does Eithan drag the Truegold elder inside the boundary with him?

Can enforcement techniques like Hollow Armour be extended outside of the persons body? So in this case Eithan was able to include the elder within his "field/bubble/shield of protection"?

Thanks!

Hey
I have two questions
1) How does healing work in cradle as the madra of a person is supreme within one's own body (without a huge power difference).
2) Could a sufficiently advanced sacred artist/beast allow someone to advance from jade to gold, without the advancer needing to bind a remnant to their core or is something else necessary.

From what my college roommate once told me, if you can think of it there is probably a Path about it. While I don't know of an exact Path that harnesses the powers of alcohol intoxication, I know of several illusion/mental paths that can make other people feel drunk . Then there are of course the glutton paths, but I doubt that is what you are talking of. There is likely a Path that uses alcohols, but they likely imbibe things like beer made from 1 million year old celestial hops or wine grown from grapes nourished with the blood of slain enemies or some nonsense like that.

Personally, I try to avoid all intoxicants. Haven't touched any alcohol since I went on a bender with one of my old college friends. He challenged me to a drinking contest, and I accepted. Unfortunately I didn't know that he could literally revert his temporal state to a point when he wasn't drunk, and even my magically enhanced constitution was no match for such trickery. I woke up a few days later surrounded by all these angry dragons with overly destructive flames. They claimed that I had violated the laws of their empire and that I would be tossed into half of a really cold jail cell made of silver. At least I think thats what they said, I had a wicked hangover at the time. I ended up having to blast my way out of there, and acquired quite a few nice dragon pelts on the way. Wonder what happened to that Empire? I'll ask my roommate once i resurrect him since he was from that world. I just need more information on the whereabouts of the last missing piece of his body. Hopefully I will be getting some more information on October 1st.

Thats NOT my fault! Its just that Nakothi and all of her children have a rather large grudge against me because I needed a few of her hearts for some R&R (Rituals and Research) and she didn't take kindly to me ripping some of them out. Her children probably still have a grudge because they keep trying to attack me whenever I visit.

Primary thought is that it's a reference to an Avatar meme, and is meant purely as humour. http://s2.quickmeme.com/img/68/68ab4ff3c2fbc362cf85f880c945701ea02e37b7f9fe4482ca6444c6e5f4dbfc.jpg

If there is any direct relevance to the current story in Cradle, I could see it referring to a past event rather than an imminent one.

The monster that is Irma wont delay us on skysworn will it? My job has me mobilizing as traffic control for powerline crews down into Houston to help with repairs over the next 3-6 weeks so i wont see much time to check for updates until Im out of that area.

No worries about the Webspawn. They would only hatch if the earth was slowly heating up, like some sort of 'Global Warming' was occurring. Then they'd hatch and consume endlessly

Thank Goodness we all know that's a myth. I mean come on! Earth heating up? The Webspawn would have a field day, and let's not even get started on the Sub-terranian uprisings that would start cropping up.

Don't worry about the webspawn. I've cast a ritual on their warrens that eliminates the pheromones that would need to be released for them to hatch. I never did find their queen, but I managed to cast a few divination spells that determined the circumstances that would need to come to pass for her to become agitated enough to directly awaken her spawn. Apparently she will only act if she senses that her air quality is too low. Don't worry about that, CO2 levels last time I checked were half as much as would be needed to agitate the queen. Granted, the last time I checked was in the 1200's, but how much could we have changed global CO2 level in 800 years anyways?

You should write your own books, if you put this kind of humor into them I would buy them.

I have written a book on my favorite subject, Necromancy, but the last time i tried to publish it it ended up regarded as a religious book by one group of people and I despise all religions as they encourage people to give up thinking for themselves and put their faith in an entity or group of entities so much more powerful than them that i find it mind-boggling that anyone would think that such an entity or entities would care about them. Besides, the book was about practical techniques regarding passage into the afterlife and eventual reincarnation. The local people liked it, but after 500 years I couldn't even recognize ANY of the spells in the edition at that time. I called it "The Book of Entering the Light: a Practical Guide to Preparing for a Successful After-Death Journey" but the local people so thoroughly butchered it that when the later editions were discovered in the ruins of their civilization they thought it was a religious book called the Book of the Dead. Since then I have forsworn publishing any of my work. Instead i occasionally send dream visions to promising mortals whenever I have information that i believe would truly help the human race progress. After all the further along you mortals advance, the more likely you are to produce a talented enough individual for me to take on as an apprentice. I have so many things i can teach an apprentice, like how to use a precision molecular bond disintegrator spell to clean up highly unstable SFW(Strong Force Weakener) fluid and how to synthesize proper experimental support surfaces made of neutronium.

Thanks, love your work. Hopefully the Hurricane doesn't impact you too much.

You probably get this a lot, but is Naraka in any way a reference to Naruto?

Or just the Buddhist word, Naraka, which means hell plane.

Is their any way to get a map of the cradle known (or otherwise) world? I really love those types of things.

On a scale of 1 to 10, where does Irma rate compared to your brother spontaneously combusting? I mean, what if your brother spontaneously combusts in the middle of Irma, that might actually be a good time for it right? You can just take him outside to extinguish him maybe?

Anyways, don't walk through any flood waters over 18 inches deep, you're in Florida, and you have alligators there.

Oh, and for those of you who have been waiting like me. Legends of Ahn (King's Dark Tidings Book 3) by Kel Kade was released two days ago and is currently available. If you haven't been waiting, and don't know what I'm talking about, go and read these real quick, you've apparently got most of a month to finish them before Will satisfies out fix.

I'm re reading the first three this month while I wait. It's hard to do because of how weak Lindon is. I keep wanting to hurry up and get to the parts where he isn't so weak.
