In which we ramble on.
And by we, I mean me.

Right Under the Wire

Whew, I almost missed posting a blog for this month. I can't believe it's been a whole month. It feels like we're still in the middle of 2022, and yet we're 1/12 through with 2023 already.

Just wait until 3023, when the Chronobots will make every day feel like a year of servitude.

I'm still working on wrapping up both books! That's taking a while, longer than I thought it would, but Waybound and my new space fantasy book are both close to completion.

At least, completion of this draft. Waybound has a bit longer to cook.

That's really all I've been doing for the last...I'm not sure, it feels like about six hundred years? Maybe the Chronobots got to me early.

I haven't even finished playing through God of War: Ragnarok, and that should tell you how busy I've been.

In the meantime, thanks for sticking with me! We have a lot of stuff coming in 2023. So much that I regularly wake up in the middle of the night, screaming and feverishly sweating.

Although that might have less to do with our planned schedule and more to do with my hellish visions of a robotic future.

Talk to you soon, I hope!

-Will

If you wake from that I highly suggest you refrain from reading a certain series written by Matthew peed lol.

Stop bugging Will about new books every three months. He said he will publish it in January. It could be January 92 or January 174th, but it will be January!!

[check check, 123] TSM fans are old hat with this “News in January…” meme format. Will must be lurking the TSM subreddit.

So, does this mean we can expect a few robotic characters in the new series?

Really makes you wonder what would seperate a sentient robot from Dross.

The wires... Duh

I imagine space robots much differently. There is potential for helpful AI characters that are witty and intelligent, or irritating clunkers with the IQ of a potato.

Dross is a beloved anomaly.

Jess

Oh, you probably meant the character's mental connection, didn't you? Not as a comparison...well... I guess I'm a potato.

Dont have to wait to 3023 and Chronobots. Just work a cubicle help desk job and you can get the same feeling today! Hope you are at least enjoying the soul crushing pressure!

Take your time on Waybound. Let it grow into a realization that you aren't done with this story or the characters, that in fact, there are a dozen more books in the life of Lindon, Yerin, and Eithan.

I 100% agree and second this. I’m even fine with waiting for a while to see where they go, but please don’t let it end so soon! I want to see the gang join the Abidan(Or Vroshir).

Just because it isn't said much I am actually glad you are ending Cradle. I have thoroughly enjoyed the story, but a story has to have an ending. Without that it is at best incomplete.

I think anyone can appreciate the goodwill in finishing a series well for the sake of invested fans even when the author is ready to move on to something new and exciting. I finished another series recently where the author seemed to hate the characters so much that he made them all miserable along with reader and betrayed most of their traits, values, etc. to get there. I'd rather skip that book altogether in hindsight, but I'm hopeful for the end of Cradle to be much better.

When you say “space fantasy,” does this mean it won’t really be sci-fi? As in it will be more like Star Wars (magic and supernatural things in space) rather than Star Trek (grounded adventures in space)?

I don't believe that Waybound has actually been written. I think he's gonna pull the old "Sneaky Rothfuss" trick, and not produce the final book until 2047, when Florida has been washed away by climbing sea levels and he needs money for a new house.

Can't wait for Waybound and to check out the new sci-fi you create :) Wish you'd publish your ebooks somewhere other than Amazon, their DRM is a pain, I have a digital library on my PC (Calibre) and I can't put any of your books there because of the DRM :c

Although I'm used to the scope of advancement throughout the series, I'm struggling to visualise a completion in just one book, unless it comes in on a par with the rise and fall of the roman empire for length.
I'm just desperate to 'see' Makiel's face when Lindon troops up in the void to save Suriel and Eithan

I could see it even taking 3 books to get there (which I would not mind). Hopefully it is not forced to get to an ending to move on to the next series.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. I honestly don't see how it's going to just be one book. Especially as Will seems to like to keep his books at a certain length.

I thought the training sequence in Black flame was perfect, it gave a sense of a passage of time without feeling repetitive. In contrast, Lindon's training in Uncrowned felt very disjointed. It didn't feel like he was actually LEARNING during those passages.

Now we've got an entire team that needs to train (don't forget healing Mercy) in order to face the next Dreadgod. Lindon said somewhere that they would defeat one Dreadgod, use it's binding to craft a weapon to use on the next one, then do it again...and again. So there needs to be at least some scenes of whatever that is, plus some sort of confrontation with the Monarchs. And what about his family/Twin Stars sect? Last we saw them he had prepared a bunch of students to split their cores, but told them not to do it. Is he going to just ascend and be like "So long suckers!"?

I *think* based on the title, that the book will end with London and team ascending, but NOT resolve the Suriel/Eithan situation. That will happen with the addition of whatever protagonists come from the next series. I am interested to see how this universe expands in that direction.

Will there be a second series to follow cradle? Maybe diving deeper into the Reaper's plans for the team that saves worlds?

It's crazy to see this series come to an end. I've practically grown up with it at this point. Thanks for the amazing work.

I don't think anyone should compare Will to Rothfuss, even as a joke. Rothfuss wrote a decent story that died on the vine. Even if you don't like everything about Will's books, at least they keep coming during our lifetime. You're comparing someone who is writer to someone who was a writer.

I for one would not at all mind if Waybound ended up the longest book in the series by significant margins it seems like it will be difficult to wrap up everything with just the normal length book

When you get taken over by bots can we ask for more cradle spin-offs. I’m sad I’ll ONLY have 13 books to reread.
Please take your time I was impatiently waiting since finishing the last book I can impatiently wait longer.

I have a hard time believing that the new space fantasy isn't literally the sequel to cradle. Since literally everything we know of the abadon and the plot takes place in space, and is fantasy. >.>
