Pax Unplugged

I’ve never been to Philadelphia before, but here I am! To enjoy Pax Unplugged, a new board game convention.

I fully expect to play many games I’ve never heard of, and at least one that becomes real and threatens my life as I play it.

I’ll also be representing the glory of the Lion clan in Saturday’s Legend of the Five Rings LCG tournament, if any of you would like to teach me a sharp lesson at the end of your swords.

I’ll probably post something from the convention this weekend, but as far as useful news goes, this is the end of me for roughly the next week. At that point, I expect to ask you more about what you’d like to see from the blog: more stories? More personal anecdotes about my life? More about the writing process? More names of the nameless, rendered into human speech in such forms as to drive your pathetic mortal brains to madness?

...but that’s for next week. For now, games!

Any chance you're planning to go to Holmat?

It depends on what you want out of the blog, Will. Is the blog a break from doing normal writing? Then maybe talking about your writing process would be the better option.

I liked the last world building session you did on here personally :)

If you do another world building session you might be better off doing it on the reddit forum than here.

I personally would love to have a little snippet of Asylum as it has been some time since any actual text of that world has been posted(the shuffles battle doesn't count since it also had stuff from TG). Anything from world building to more stories on the Amharanai, or some stories of the Regent's, all in all anything for an appetizer on what's to come incentive if you will for the neigh Sayers of the Elder Empire.

Also a Arena battle between the 4 main characters sometime after OKAK would be godlike.

An arena battle between Lindon, Simon, Shera and Calder? Can I have this right now? I bet Calder would die pretty fast.

This is why I said post OKAK although with the sword and emperor's armor he should be able to hold his own right now.

What is your favorite part of the writing process? Creating the story, the editing (I doubt it's this part, lol), or the reaction from your fans?

Pax unplugged sounds awesome. I was not able to go this year but am looking forward to next year. I haven't been to a large board game convention before how was it?

I posted this before but whatever, am I the only one still waiting for a continuation of "House of Cool Swords"? It seemed like a great idea, although it could be a bit more serious in its execution. Maybe you could work a Manor of Swords as a feature in the Cradle world? Or maybe a Hall of Blades? Like Redmoon hall, except for swords.

I just really think it was a great idea for a full-scale novel and could even be a story totally independent from Cradle.

I would however like to see Yerin's reaction to finding something as awesome to train in as a House of Cool Swords.

I actually saw an homage to one of the Valenhall characters in a lit-RPG novel. He was waiting to enter a tower to explore, sword scraping the ceiling, doll in the pocket, white hair hanging in his eyes.

It really gave me a chuckle thinking of a Valenhall traveller wiping the floor of that tower with anything stupid enough to attack him. :)

You talking about Sufficiently Advanced Magic? I don't remember the whole story completely but I do remember there was a tower and a guy with white hair who was super OP.

Hey Will just a crazy suggestion here. Have you ever thought about hiring an assistant? He doesn't have to do anything big, maybe just help u file or filter your work and maybe help you bounce ideas off or something. Idk if other writers do that and I suppose there's the chance of info leaking soooooo..... there's that too, maybe someone you know without a good job? It just sounds so cool, like a trusty butler lol. Either way it was funny thinking it up.

What is your writing process? Do you hear voices? Do the voices hear you? Do you hear silence and weave magic? Or does the sound of silence drive you to madness and you put that madness down on paper? (Which transcribes via runes to your computer/computation device)

Is there a ton of planning? (Like - Shera Sleeps. then she kills a guy. Then she sleeps. Then she takes over the world. Then she sleeps. Then she takes over the universe, then the multiverse. Then she sleeps. Then she battles Simon, has a child, raises the child to be a writer. Then she sleeps. Then you divide all that up into 3 books) or more short bursts? (Like- Shera sleeps. Then YOU sleep and you are like 'Hey! It would be awesome for Simon to get a power where he bursts into flames! And then you dine on the souls of the departed, and you're like 'Hey! Lindon should get his leg chopped off and get a cybernetic leg!' and then you start writing. 11-12 days after you start, you take your first break)

Did you get a chance to meet Patrick Rothfuss at PAX? It would be awesome for your publicity if you could get an endorsement from him about your books.

I think Brandon Sanderson's style is much more similar to Will Wight's style than Rothfuss. He'd be the better match. Plus he'll usually read stuff if you give him a copy and he only ever writes reviews for books he really loves, so there's nothing to lose.

Cradle is somewhat similar to The Stormlight archive in that they have logical systems for magic, have a large framework multiverse around them, and draw from eastern themes.

Now I'm not saying anybody should hunt Brandon down and shove a copy of Unsouled in his hands, but if you happen to be carrying a fresh copy around and give it to him he'll probably read it.

Was Brandon at PAX Unplugged? I know that Mr. Rothfuss was for sure there so that was why I was asking. Regardless, any mainstream publicity would be awesome for Will.

You know I just had a crazy idea. If Simon somehow got ahold of an artifact from a completely separate world (and it was compatible with Valinhall.) could he have the Nye Eldest attune it to Valinahll?

*Say like an artifact from Cradle or Sanctum or maybe even Suriels origin world.

I'm fairly certain that he could. That seems to be the case between world fragments on amalgam, so it should hold true beyond it.

Why don't you write longer books? I feel like I am anticipating this super awesome boo, for like 6 months, and when it comes out I am super happy, and then I finish in like a day!!

Reply
Quinn

Yes ... but you only had to wait 6 months rather than 1 year or a year and a half for a book that would take you 2-2.5 days. ;)

Here are a few fantasy authors that I enjoy:

Brandon Sanderson
Mark Lawrence
Brent weeks
Andrew Rowe (indie author like Will)

I just realized that you said BOOKs and not authors, my apologies. Here are some specific books that are awesome from my aforementioned authors:

- The Mistborn series, starting with "the Final Empire" by Brandon Sanderson. An excellent place to start in his works.
- Prince of thorns by Mark Lawrence. Be warned that it is significantly darker than Will's works.
- The Black Prism by Brent weeks. This is part of a 5 book series. Some may suggest reading his earlier works of the Night Angel trilogy but I personally enjoyed this series better.
- Sufficiently Advanced Magic by Andrew Rowe. A thoroughly enjoyable book of structured, almost videogame style magic. Andrew definitely needs more credit for his work.

These are just a few that you may enjoy.

I'm trying to think of writers that are like Will. I will make some assumptions. You want fantasy. You want less detail driven fantasy and more imagination. So Lord of the Rings and Memory, Sorrow, Thorn are out (though you can try those if you like a great series) The Belgariad by David Eddings is fantastic. If I had to pick a similar writer it might be Eddings. They both have fun characters and imaginative worlds. Also, they don't get caught in a ton of detail. Eddings is more traditional fantasy though. Try any of Terry Prachets books. Ready Player One is great if very different. Its more sci-fi, but brings in some great writing. You won't be disappointed. Novice by Taran Matharu. Rangers apprentice is fun if a little less magical. They make for nice quick reads. Its written by John Flanagan. Five Kingdoms by Brandon Mull is somewhat similar. And Beyonders by Brandon Mull. I found all of these books to be enjoyable. And as mentioned above, anything by Brandon Sanderson. Lockwood and Co is also a fun series ... more ghosts than fantasy though. These are just a few that I think have some similarities with some of the series that Will has written. They are fun fantasy worlds with memorable characters. Some aren't necessarily adult fiction, but that is more the content than the writing. They make fun, quick reads that you can read multiple times. Sanderson even has an overarching world system like Will's Way.
