In which we ramble on.
And by we, I mean me.

Heading for the Hills!

1/18/2018

As we speak, I'm headed out the door for a two-week trip!

Week 1: New York City, where I fully expect to meet the Ninja Turtles. If there's time, I'll hop on over to the neighboring New Donk City to see Mario.

Week 2: Israel, where I don't have any idea where we're going and will leave that up to the tour guide. If I meet the Ninja Turtles there, I will be surprised.

I'm coming back on February 1st, but between now and then, I will be dead. RIP.

Know that I died as I lived: on my laptop.

Heh I just met Rob Paulson at an Animaniacs event in San Francisco last weekend. He voiced Yakko.

Tall guy, high voice, white hair. Funny.

Also voiced 50% of the 80s ninja turtles.

He's going on vacation. If he replies to one post then he has to reply to them all. I bet he'll break down and peek in on us at some point, but doing work on a vacation makes it not a vacation.

Will needs to experience new things to find artistic inspiration in the world to fuel his writing. I think. I'm not entirely sure how the process works.

Regardless though Will, you should read Mother of Learning on the plane ride to Isreal

You can find the story in various formats at this link

So I did a little algebra to guesstimate Will's progress on OKAK. If he's reached the 7% mark after four moths that means to reach the hundred percent mark he'll need 54.14285 months. Or about 4.76 years.

What I'm getting at is please update the progress bar or I'll be very sad.

The first book is called Red Rising. Originally a trilogy, though the recent release of the 4th book got mixed reviews.

Will likes to keep his progress bar low so we're not expecting the book any time soon. In reality the last 60% will probably be done in a blink relative to the rest. He just tends to keep a bit of a buffer in case he needs to say, rewrite half the book because his beta readers really hate it.

See his previous blog posts for proof.

Most of those book signings are set up by publishing houses anyway, which Will doesn't have. Plus were would he go to set one up? He doesn't have any books at Borders, Barns and Noble, or any of the other bookstore chains.

I guess he could cap out at a random coffee house for an hour or two and tweet "Hey, I'm in New York City! If you want a book signed visit table number 12 at Generic Overpriced Coffee joint!"

But then what if nobody shows up? Or even worse, a bunch of people show up and the Coffee joint manager kicks him out for bringing in too many people? Or even worse worse, what if he gets a total weirdo who wants to take him to their home or something? Book signings always have other people with the author who can shuffle off people who aren't conducive to a smooth and pleasant books signing, but Will doesn't have that.

I it would take is one really weird person saying "Will Wight! You're mine now! I shall lock you in my basement now!" and not take no for an answer to ruin the book signing. Great Elder's know we see enough weirdos just on this blog.

Will! I made it to the 20,000 word mark on my story but it suddenly got much harder... Idk why but every time I reach this length I end up giving up the story. I just lose my infatuation with it and want to change everything and write a new story with new ideas.

Why is that Will?

I ascend from Death to answer this one question, and this one alone, before returning to the grave.

This is part of the process. I had many 20k stories before House of Blades, because that’s about the point where the inner critic kicks in and you realize what you’ve written isn’t as good as it was in your head. Now you’ve realized that the REALLY good story is a different idea entirely, or you’ve figured out that you can take the current story in a much better direction as long as you start over from the beginning.

This feeling is not to be trusted. Those are lies whispered into your ears by Book Satan. If you switched ideas or started over, you would once again get about 20k in before facing the same situation.

You cannot evaluate a story until it is finished. Give yourself permission to write a story that you feel is the worst thing ever. Finish it anyway. Push forward. This is where the hard work of writing comes in.

Only when it’s finished can you actually start to judge whether it really is terrible or if it’s actually pretty good. You’re going to feel like it’s terrible throughout the whole middle of the process, and that’s natural. Just don’t let it stop you from putting words on paper.

Illithel
1/30/2018 09:22:24 am

I see. I suppose this feeling is why 99% of people who try writing never finish. I've always wanted to write the kind of books that I read, but I guess reading developed authors like yourself sets the bar too high for a first novel.

I shall continue upon my journey to write this book, even if it never becomes something I can share with others, it will be good practice so that maybe the next one I write will be.

Thanks Will, somewhere in the back of my mind I knew I'd heard this advice before (Probably in Sanderson's lecture series) but I didn't really believe it until now.

If I am successful I'll let you know, because the book will be dedicated to you. If that's not weird. It might be weird to get a book dedicated to you by some random person who reads your blog.

Also thank you for rising from the dead for me!

Mike

Hey Will I would like to recommend the game Kingdom Come Deliverance to you. It comes out February 18.

It's a medieval RPG game that looks like it's going to be very good. No magic in it but the level of historical details make up for that.

Unlike most stories, you're just an average guy. You're a farmer at first and maybe when your character gets really skilled you can take on three or four soldiers, but you're never going to reach the point where you can fight whole armies. You've got to play tactically because of that.

Also the NPC's really have their own lives. When you're not there it's not like Skyrim where the NPC's are just waiting around for you to reach the next part of their quest. If you aren't there the NPC's will do the quest without you (Maybe dying alone the way). Part of the idea of this game is that you're playing as an average-ish medieval peasant. All the NPC's have their own lives and stories and they'll go about them with or without you playing a part in them. Even when your character is sleeping the game is keeping track of all the NPC's, their decisions, and the results of their decisions. It's got 16 square kilometers of open world content. Give it a try if you have a chance.

I too have decided to write a story as part of an elaborate seven stage plan to trick Will into becoming my friend.

I shall call my novel "House of Cool Swords". It shall be about a humble boy with big dreams who discovers he's not actually the chosen one and his village crush is actually the princess of his country.

Then Simon... no wait... Timon? Jimon? Himon? Anyway, he will kick the chosen one to the curb and then give the princess a big kiss and they will all live happily ever after. And then Will Wight will read it and say "Gosh, what a cool and original story. I must email this author and see if she wants to discuss writing with me."

And I will reply and say "Oh, I don't know. I live five states away... ah, what the heck. Why not?"

And then Will will be tricked into becoming my friend.

Hey Will did you ever get back to reading Desolate Era? I know you dropped it fairly early on way back when because it felt like the Ji Ning was the best, but the world has 4 more expansions in scope to bring in stronger enemies after you left, and 20 more books.

I believe you said you left after the tournament arc, but the universe expands dramatically after that to give Ji Ning foes a level higher than him. It might give you some ideas for plotting Cradle books for what should happen after the crew ascends from Cradle. Also, it might give you some ideas for large scale Abidan-level problems. Not many other Wuxia web novels reach the sheer scale that Desolate Era does.

It's on book 40 now, and will be finishing up translation in the next 3-4 months so now is a good time to get started.

Hey
While we're waiting for Will to reappear, do you think that scales (solidified clumps of madra) serve as a form of near universal currency in cradle.

Reply
Frodo Baggins
2/3/2018 06:05:36 am

I don't see why not. They're a decentralized currency because anybody powerful enough can make them. Also, they're always being consumed by less powerful people using them for cultivation.

Reply
Skulldragon7

I thought only pure madra or mining devices could make them with the exception of lord level scales which can be made by any lord.

Frodo Baggins
2/5/2018 09:26:26 am

That's true. I guess what I meant was you don't have a centralized entity who is the only one allowed to make money. Scales are innately valuable so anybody can make them and they're just as good.

Quick unrelated question,

What's the fastest, easiest, cash-grabby type of book on Amazon KDP. Like, if I needed to make some money fast, don't care about long-term sales or building a brand. Minimum startup expenses for editing + cover. Litrpg? Smut adventure? Also how short a story can I get away with?

Thanks a bunch.

No, don't bother him. This happens fairly frequently whenever he's really either focused on writing or reading something new. Or some combination thereof. We will hear from him in a week or two either way when he's ready for a break.

That is, as long as he didn't discover a sudden desire to reread Malzahan or Wheel of Time. Or chose to dive into The Subspace Emmisary's Worlds Conquest (Over 4 million word long fanfiction).
