Crimson Vault Release Date

Well, this will come as no surprise to many of you, but I won't have The Crimson Vault out by the 10th.

There are many reasons for this, but here are the main two:

1.) House of Blades was far more successful than I expected.
        As a result, I've had way more work to do. When I set the August 10th release date, I expected to have sold maybe 1500 copies by now. Instead, I just crossed thirteen thousand. It apparently takes a lot of work to maintain a successful book. Who knew?
        This also means that your expectations are higher. People liked House of Blades more than I thought they would, which means The Crimson Vault has to be as good as I can make it. At this point, rushing it out like this just wouldn't cut it.
        So, because of House of Blades, I had to effectively write a better sequel than I anticipated in less time than I expected to have.

2.) The Crimson Vault is longer than I anticipated.
        If The Crimson Vault was the length I had expected it to be, I would have finished writing it four or five days ago. Instead, I'm still not done. In fact, I had to almost completely re-write the last third of the story so that it didn't feel rushed or abbreviated. A lot of people felt that I skimmed too much in House of Blades, and I'm trying to avoid that here. After editing, I'm not sure whether it will end up longer than the first book, but it's certainly longer right now.

That said, I will have the book out before the end of August. It will not be September when this book is released. I don't care what stage of the editing process the book's in at that point; if I have to release a draft that still has my margin notes in it, I will do that. If I have to release extra chapters later as free DLC, I will do that.* But I will 100% have it to you this month.

Believe me, I hate to wait for new releases as much as you do, so I'm committed to making your wait as short as possible.

Now, in a totally unrelated piece of news, a very helpful reader has informed me that the latest draft of House of Blades went out with the text entirely in bold. So if you bought the book in the past four or five days, the text was bold.

That's extremely annoying, and I apologize for it. I've changed it in Amazon's database, and it should be fixed within the next few hours. If this has happened to you, please email Amazon with the problem, and ask them to let you download the new version (as far as I know, this is the only way to get updated drafts of a Kindle book).

Once the upload is available, I will be trying to contact Amazon and have them re-release the latest draft for everyone who has bought House of Blades, so that you all have the newest typo-free--and hopefully un-bolded--version.

*NOTE: These weird things won't happen, I just use them as an illustration of how committed I am to getting it out in August.

I can and have. The issue isn't getting the changes made--that's easy, I corrected it fifteen minutes after learning there was a problem--it's getting those changes to people. If you bought an old version of House of Blades, it does NOT automatically upgrade itself when I update the text.

Case in point: I've edited the book for typos ten or twelve times since it came out, but on my Kindle it's still the version from June 1st.

So I can upload a new version all I want, and new customers will get that corrected version, but people who already bought it won't receive the latest copy. I have a first-run copy of Blood Song that has more typos in it than commas, from shortly after Anthony Ryan uploaded it.

I can't say I've ever published, but there are times when I'll get an e-mail from Amazon letting me know that I have an update. When I go to 'my kindle library, I'll get something like this:

The Hungering Saga Complete (update available)
A corrected version of this book is available.
Update this title now.

I'm not sure how you get amazon to send the e-mails or schedule an update, but it is possible. The following link may help.

I just have to wait twelve hours before I can do that. And I've never done it before, so I'm not 100% confident that it will work. We'll see.

You just gotta tell Amazon there were "significant" changes made to the manuscript and they will tell everyone who bought it about the update. Then people can choose to update or not. The only downside is that people lose their notes and highlights once they update. I think Amazon will let you update everyone like that twice a year or something. I don't remember exactly but there was some time frame when I did it. Good luck on the sequel pal. I totally understand the pressure of making book 2 better. We're rooting for you. :-)

We care. Please take the time you need to polish the novel to your satisfaction. Another month or so isn't that huge of a deal. House of Blades is still fresh in the minds of your readers, and pretty much anyone who looks at the release date for HoB should understand. Ordinarily I'd troll you for missing a release date, but HoB was your first book, it was a damned good book, and it has been barely more than two months since its release. We will survive, at least for a while :).

Thanks, Brian! You guys have been awesomely supportive, and that really helps take pressure off of me. It's a relief to be able to focus on writing the book the way I want to, and not just rushing it out.

That said, those things won't really happen. I just used those examples as hyperbole. The book will be ready for release before the end of the month anyway. If I hadn't been so overwhelmed and thrown off by my experience with House of Blades, it would have been ready by the 10th. I swear.

I won't lie, I'm kinda disappointed. I read a lot, and I haven't been as excited for a sequel since I finished a dance with dragons. I really got into this book. However, I understand and appreciate the dedication to put out the beat possible book you can. Thank you for your effort. And on another note, I recently read blood song and it was great.

Honestly, for the most part, you're totally right. It reflects the fact that--even though I edited the whole book--I was a better writer when I finished than I was when I started.

Got the book yesterday, finished this morning, jumped on google straight away to learn what's happening about book 2... And I agree with some of the comments above: despite how much I would have loved to be able to get stuck into Crimson Vault this very moment, I much rather wait as long as it takes (i.e., even into September!!) to get as good a read as possible!

I cant tell you how much I appreciate your candor and work ethic with the second book. Don't kill yourself or anything finishing it.
To hear an author willing to release a book that may not be 100% polished so people can sink their teeth into it is amazing to me. Thanks very much for a great series of books. Keep up the good work :-)

Thanks, Tim! One of the major reasons I moved the book back was because I realized I WAS killing myself to try and reach August 10th. It just wasn't healthy, and almost as importantly, it probably wouldn't have ended in the high-quality book I'd like to write. I really needed some breathing room, and now I have it!

That said, I know I (as a reader) hate to wait for the next book in a series. So I just wanted to assure you that it won't be a LONG wait, I can at least promise you that.

I just bought your book and read it yesterday and by the end I was so scared the trilogy wouldn't be finished my heart was beating so fast and I was whispering pleasepleasepleaseplease as I hit your author page ... And was super ridiculously sad, but excited as you said it would be out on the 10th which is in two days! Kind of devastated it's not to be but I'll be waiting breath held for the end of August.
I'm glad you've been so rewarded with house of blades - you deserve it, it was the best few dollars I've spent thus far on kindle!

I loved the first book and can't wait for the next one. Scratch that... for this story i'm willing to wait. I just really wanted to thank you for the fact that you communicate with the readers and tell us whats going on. I'm currently waiting on the sequels to at least 6 series, 3 of which for about 2 years now (the authors have said nothing about when the sequels r coming out (for the 3 )). So I not only wanted to thank you for producing a good book, I also wanted to thank you for keeping us readers posted.

Found house of blades on kindle while browsing and read the reviews. The first 17 pages were all 4 or 5 stars! I was very uncertain after that because I thought that the book couldn't possibly be that good. So I bought it, read it and all I have to say is, the reviews were all accurate. For a first book that was one of the best books I have ever read, and that's after books like Shogun and Wheel of Time. The concept was unique and awesome. The writing fluid and descriptive.

No pressure, take as much time as you need. When you finish it, maybe do a major uptake on the first book to remind people about book 2. Thank yo for book 1, and I have high expectations for book 2!

I like longer books and more detail is great as long as you're not telling me about the the plants at the side of the road. We can wait. Except you know, after this one comes out, everyone gets all antsy and grumbly about when the THIRD one comes out :)

Also per the Alin and Simon fight (other commentators) , if it happens wouldn't Simon avoid the fight ? Like beat him with defense? I dunno

I literally read the book last night and got super excited when I saw the sequel would be published in August. Honestly, when most books take two years to get a sequel I'm a-okay with waiting for a couple of more weeks.
Seriously though, I spend most of my free time reading (as embarrassing as that is) and House of Blades is easily one of my favorite 2013 reads!

Have just finished House of Blades - bought it yesterday, and had me reading until 2am (and I had to be in work!).

I'm impressed and hungry for more; I'm pleased that there will not be long to wait. Creativity can't be rushed, so don't feel too pressured to get it out the door. For all the grumbling - that's just building the anticipation.

Great book! If I'm into a book it's hard for me to put down; House of Blades falls in this category. I was even reading on my lunch hour... Well really it was two hours, but for an hour of that I had my Kindle propped against my laptop so it at least looked like I was working.

Hello Will.

I've become a creepy stalker just to see how well your book is doing and I'm amazed you've sold 13,000 copies and the numbers keep rising! That's just amazing! I've had a few comments that people have said to me, saying how they bought the book because the cover looked cool, and when they read it, they were blown away by the sheer awesome of the contents.

I'd just like to say that it is just surreal to see my sister and I's work on the internet being circulated like that, and to think that 13,000 people have seen my work is just awesome! I hope that the sales for The Crimson Vault are tenfold of what they are for House of Blades.

I'd like to mention that working on your book covers has been a great first real freelance job, and I've gotten better as an artist as I've been working. Can't wait to start your next cover. But that will be when you're ready of course. (Also, my apologises for not publishing the 1st cover on my website. I thought I did but I didn't, though I just put it up there now. I'm dumb.)

As noted in my e-mail, I don't think there is much risk when moving the date of a book within the same month. You've produced quite a wonderful story and I for one am glad you have decided to push back the date to produce an even better story. Have no worries, no one will confuse your production with GRRM

That said, I do appreciate your concern for the commitments you've made to your readers, that says you care..never a bad thing.

Yeah, that was my main concern: that I promised you guys something that I can't (in good conscience) deliver on time. That makes me feel crappy.

As a reader, I agree with you: I don't mind when someone pushes their story back a few weeks. It's when we start getting into months that I start getting irritated, and when it's going to be next year, then I'll get frustrated. So it's not like I expected an outcry of hate or something, I just hated being unable to live up to a promise that I made.

This honestly the best book I can remember reading in a long time, and I've read a lot. Like, 3 whole books (maybe more, crazy right?). To show my dedication to this series and your new authorship, I'm even typing this comment using only my nose and a few soggy french fries to contact the keyboard. I thought maybe if I channeled enough energy into this, the dedication and focus would transfer through the computer and give you the strength to continue working on book 2. I've also named my hamburger, companion of aforementioned soggy fries, Will, after you. Yup.
P.S. We're seeing those bears again right? If we don't, I'm going to have to do something incredibly stupid, like abduct a polar bear from a nearby zoo, or Antwootica.

If you don't count House of Blades, I've MAYBE read one book. I'm not even sure I finished it. That was enough for me.

You know, I thought I felt a surge of french-fry-related strength at 1 this morning. I sat bolt upright in bed and said, "Sleep? Who has time for sleep?" and then I continued working on Crimson Vault.

I see that this was your doing.

Actually, the real reason is so that when you become all rich and famous I can brag to my friends ( because we all love your book(s)) about how you are on my friendslist.
I'd be like:

And they'd be all like
"Woah"

I do have a 360, and soon I will likely order an Xbox One. I'm not afraid of creepy Big-Brother-like Kinect monitoring, no sir.

I have a confession to make, though: I rarely play on Xbox Live. I, frankly, just don't play that many online multiplayer games (on my Xbox. On the computer, I play those games all the time).

Send me an email, though, and I'll give you my account name. Just be prepared for me to never be on, since I play singleplayer so frequently.

This just encourages Lord Gates to continue further down the path of evil. Two months after you buy a new Xbox One the price will suddenly drop by about $300.00, then one year after you buy your replacement for your sadly departed Xbox One, Lord Gates and his corporate henchmen will reveal to the world a new sexy sleek version of the Xbox One. If its anything like the PS3, don't buy it. Buy the old PS2 which is a beuatiful piece of technology that lasts for years on end. The PS3 breaks within a year of ur purchase. Granted you already have an XBox.
I would recommend and alien ware. It is almost the same as an Xbox/play station but it allows u to do what normal computers do.

I think we can all agree the ps2 was a beautiful piece of machinery at least. Will won't need to purchase an Alienware computer. 1) it's too expensive for what you get. 2) I build computers for fun, and I will be assisting him building his next one. But I do agree with the sentiment, PC>console, currently at least.

Mike, I'm noticing somewhat of a pattern with your names.

Don't be afraid of the sheer genius it took me to figure that out; in a previous life, I was a military code-breaker. Don't tell anyone.

And there actually is a reason for them being called the Dragon Army, it's just not really elaborated upon. I explain it slightly better in The Crimson Vault, but still not fully. In the future, I might write a story explaining it.

The short answer is that the name was Valin's way of screwing with the previous King of Damasca.

The slightly longer answer is that I needed a way to differentiate the original 13 Valinhall Travelers from future Valinhall Travelers, like Simon, so that I had the opportunity to possibly take the story in certain directions AFTER this trilogy.

I downloaded House of Blades on Wednesday as a way to pass the time in between my two jobs. I had intended to only read in that time span on the two days I work doubles and drag out the book for a few weeks. I finished it on Friday at 3 in the morning. I am thrilled that it won't be five years until I can read Crimson Vault.

I loved house of blade, but don't do what some writers out there do by changing a character. I understand emotional truama, but a complete 180 turn is far to much. If you kept the characters as they were I will bow down and never touch another book but house of blades and crimson vault

I think I see what Simon is getting at. Like for example, remember in Blood Song, Vaelin was a little arrogant and didn't care if he had to fight or not? But at the end when he faced the shield, be said that he never wanted to draw his sword again and he was extremely humble? I really enjoyed this book! I started it this morning and finished it up just now (3:00 am) and am very impressed! You did many things very well but most importantly I liked how you created a believably strong main character who has specific limits and boundaries. Hes not some all conquering badass who i know will win the fight before he even goes into it and that gives a lot of depth! Since it seems a war is coming up i look forward to seeing how you deal with the numbers of war, and i know that sounds stupid but i recently read a book series (Ririya Revelations) and was very disappointed by them. They would have a 20000 man army with maybe 3000 people in the largest city of the known world! anyway great work and my only complaint is that i'd like longer books :D

So there's a battle going on, but I'm mostly focused on Simon cutting his way through it to kill [SPOILER] and save [NOT LEAH] from [SPOILER].

Ok, last one, I promise. What's up with Amazon and their "You saved $xx amount of money on this novel!1!" pricing? They advertise some of their pricing as author wet dreams, $10, then mark them down 90%. If I did that with my biz, my customers would be all, "You be trippin', pimpin'!" My customers don't actually talk like that, but I kinda wish they did. Makes it hard to take their pricing seriously. Most of the independent author novels I end up buying for $1 or so are lucky I don't file assault charges on behalf of the English language, present company excluded.

I could be wrong, but I didn't think that was a racial stereotype so much as a stereotype about the crappy quality of most Chinese restaurants.

As I understand that cliche, it's not that Chinese people somehow like to eat cats, but that Chinese restaurants are often so crappy that they use mystery meat that might as well be cat.

As I said, though, I could be wrong.

In all fairness, I've eaten dog before, in Korea. Ke'gogi, I think it was called. Thing is, I actually knew it was dog when I ate it. Not bad. I don't recommend the experience, but it wasn't bad. The worst is when my dogs look at me with those soulful eyes, those judging eyes, as if they know I once snacked on Cousin Gae from Korea.

When I paid a few bucks for the House of Blades I was expecting a halfway decent book that I'd never read again. I cant believe how wrong I was! I've read the book three times now and it doesn't get old! If I had to wait another six months for the Crimson Vault, I wouldn't care! (actually I probably would now that I know it's coming in just a few days) thanks for the great book Will!
Ps I love how even though alin is supposed to save everyone, Simon does all the saving! Take that, stupid prophecy!
