Crimson Vault Release Date
Well, this will come as no surprise to many of you, but I won't have The Crimson Vault out by the 10th.
There are many reasons for this, but here are the main two:
1.) House of Blades was far more successful than I expected.
As a result, I've had way more work to do. When I set the August 10th release date, I expected to have sold maybe 1500 copies by now. Instead, I just crossed thirteen thousand. It apparently takes a lot of work to maintain a successful book. Who knew?
This also means that your expectations are higher. People liked House of Blades more than I thought they would, which means The Crimson Vault has to be as good as I can make it. At this point, rushing it out like this just wouldn't cut it.
So, because of House of Blades, I had to effectively write a better sequel than I anticipated in less time than I expected to have.
2.) The Crimson Vault is longer than I anticipated.
If The Crimson Vault was the length I had expected it to be, I would have finished writing it four or five days ago. Instead, I'm still not done. In fact, I had to almost completely re-write the last third of the story so that it didn't feel rushed or abbreviated. A lot of people felt that I skimmed too much in House of Blades, and I'm trying to avoid that here. After editing, I'm not sure whether it will end up longer than the first book, but it's certainly longer right now.
That said, I will have the book out before the end of August. It will not be September when this book is released. I don't care what stage of the editing process the book's in at that point; if I have to release a draft that still has my margin notes in it, I will do that. If I have to release extra chapters later as free DLC, I will do that.* But I will 100% have it to you this month.
Believe me, I hate to wait for new releases as much as you do, so I'm committed to making your wait as short as possible.
If you have further questions, or would like to tell me what a horrible person I am, please leave a comment or send me an email: <Will@WillWight.com>
Now, in a totally unrelated piece of news, a very helpful reader has informed me that the latest draft of House of Blades went out with the text entirely in bold. So if you bought the book in the past four or five days, the text was bold.
That's extremely annoying, and I apologize for it. I've changed it in Amazon's database, and it should be fixed within the next few hours. If this has happened to you, please email Amazon with the problem, and ask them to let you download the new version (as far as I know, this is the only way to get updated drafts of a Kindle book).
Once the upload is available, I will be trying to contact Amazon and have them re-release the latest draft for everyone who has bought House of Blades, so that you all have the newest typo-free--and hopefully un-bolded--version.
*NOTE: These weird things won't happen, I just use them as an illustration of how committed I am to getting it out in August.
8/5/2013 02:47:50 am
I believe that you can upload an updated corrected version through Amazon.
8/5/2013 04:23:01 am
I can and have. The issue isn't getting the changes made--that's easy, I corrected it fifteen minutes after learning there was a problem--it's getting those changes to people. If you bought an old version of House of Blades, it does NOT automatically upgrade itself when I update the text.
8/5/2013 05:25:00 am
I can't say I've ever published, but there are times when I'll get an e-mail from Amazon letting me know that I have an update. When I go to 'my kindle library, I'll get something like this:
8/5/2013 06:10:38 am
Yeah, that's what I meant by the last sentence: Once the upload is available, I will be trying to contact Amazon and have them re-release the latest draft for everyone who has bought House of Blades, so that you all have the newest typo-free--and hopefully un-bolded--version.
You just gotta tell Amazon there were "significant" changes made to the manuscript and they will tell everyone who bought it about the update. Then people can choose to update or not. The only downside is that people lose their notes and highlights once they update. I think Amazon will let you update everyone like that twice a year or something. I don't remember exactly but there was some time frame when I did it. Good luck on the sequel pal. I totally understand the pressure of making book 2 better. We're rooting for you. :-)
8/9/2013 01:44:17 am
Thanks, Bobby! That's great to know.

8/5/2013 04:27:42 am
Thanks, Brian! You guys have been awesomely supportive, and that really helps take pressure off of me. It's a relief to be able to focus on writing the book the way I want to, and not just rushing it out.
8/5/2013 06:51:27 am
I won't lie, I'm kinda disappointed. I read a lot, and I haven't been as excited for a sequel since I finished a dance with dragons. I really got into this book. However, I understand and appreciate the dedication to put out the beat possible book you can. Thank you for your effort. And on another note, I recently read blood song and it was great.
8/5/2013 08:10:48 am
Yeah, honestly I'm disappointed too. I thought I would be able to make it, and I felt like I had let myself down when I realized I couldn't.
8/5/2013 08:08:08 am
Take your time. I think speak for most of us when we say we'd rather wait a while longer and have an awesome book then have you rush it and feel cheated.
8/5/2013 08:14:01 am
They would never turn against me, their creator! They worship me, using their powers only against my enemies and people who misuse the word "literally."
8/5/2013 09:04:15 am
By the way is there a way to edit comments? I know what I was trying to say and I can barely read my original comment!
8/5/2013 09:18:59 am
Unfortunately not. Even I can't edit my own comments, and I'm administrator of the site. I could delete it, if you'd like, and you could re-post. Or you could just correct yourself.
8/5/2013 09:19:43 am
I meant, "correct yourself in a different post." You see? If only I could edit my old posts, this wouldn't be necessary.
8/6/2013 12:22:24 pm
I agree with J! :)
8/5/2013 11:14:34 am
longer book. nice.
8/8/2013 10:58:52 am
I know, I know. I was trying to get around it, but the plot really justified a few more pages.
8/9/2013 01:34:28 am
Seemed like the writing/prose got better further in to the book.
8/9/2013 01:43:19 am
Honestly, for the most part, you're totally right. It reflects the fact that--even though I edited the whole book--I was a better writer when I finished than I was when I started.
8/5/2013 01:25:02 pm
Just wanted to say that I just finished your book and absolutely enjoyed it as much as I did blood song! So I don't mind waiting another month or however for your next book if it helps make it great too
8/8/2013 10:59:23 am
Thanks for the compliment, Roy! I'll do my best.
8/5/2013 02:18:33 pm
Will, you have to release lemon spin-off stories of your characters as DLC. The Will Wight Street Team demands it!
8/8/2013 11:00:41 am
I keep telling you, Julius, I don't need a team of streetwalkers in House of Blades T-shirts.
8/8/2013 06:03:11 pm
Hook him up anyways Julius :)
8/12/2013 04:58:27 am
But everyone loves a good street walker! And I might just makes house of blade t-shirts and put a few online for sale (with permission from your artists of course) ... then you wouldn't have a choice, HA!
8/6/2013 12:21:10 pm
I'm slightly disappointed too (being that I will be with my in-laws from the 9th through the end of August and I was hoping to get some good reading material), but on the other hand, I know that by waiting you make the book that much better, so I will wait in earnest for it to come out! :)
8/8/2013 11:01:19 am
I'm sorry, Shiloh, but I'll do my best to make it worth the wait.
8/11/2013 10:20:00 am
Lol! I'm sure it will be! :) Can't wait to read it! And congratulations on how well your book is doing! I am sure that "Crimson Vault" will do really well too!
8/6/2013 10:38:15 pm
Well, here's another newly converted fan just signing in to fill your ears with more compliments! Got the book yesterday, finished this morning, jumped on google straight away to learn what's happening about book 2... And I agree with some of the comments above: despite how much I would have loved to be able to get stuck into Crimson Vault this very moment, I much rather wait as long as it takes (i.e., even into September!!) to get as good a read as possible!
8/8/2013 11:02:28 am
Well, Alex, my swollen ego can always use more compliments. Thanks for giving me a shot!
8/7/2013 10:41:56 am
I cant tell you how much I appreciate your candor and work ethic with the second book. Don't kill yourself or anything finishing it.
8/8/2013 11:05:01 am
Thanks, Tim! One of the major reasons I moved the book back was because I realized I WAS killing myself to try and reach August 10th. It just wasn't healthy, and almost as importantly, it probably wouldn't have ended in the high-quality book I'd like to write. I really needed some breathing room, and now I have it!
8/7/2013 12:56:30 pm
I just bought your book and read it yesterday and by the end I was so scared the trilogy wouldn't be finished my heart was beating so fast and I was whispering pleasepleasepleaseplease as I hit your author page ... And was super ridiculously sad, but excited as you said it would be out on the 10th which is in two days! Kind of devastated it's not to be but I'll be waiting breath held for the end of August.
8/8/2013 11:06:53 am
Thanks very much! I am proud to have distracted you from your classwork; it means I'm more entertaining than the lecture :)
8/8/2013 12:43:30 pm
No worries here. Like I said before, take as long as you want to make it right. Its your book, we just have the honor and pleasure of reading it. Hope your writing goes well and you are continually inspired. Good luck and waiting to read the sequal with great anticipation.
8/13/2013 08:50:00 am
Thanks, Brian! I'm working on it right now.
8/9/2013 09:44:28 pm
Hi there, just woke up this morning brimming with excitement. I have literally been looking forward to today for weeks! But then I checked the blog and nearly screamed. 'Nooooooo'. But after I calmed down I realised that I would prefer to wait longer for a better, (and hopefully longer I LOVE long books) book. I cannot wait for The Crimson Vault to come out, but no pressure. Just writing to say I really enjoyed your work. So take your time and make it a good one!
8/13/2013 08:51:21 am
I am shamed. I have raised your hopes and then dashed them against the cold, hard rocks of reality. I apologize.
8/10/2013 05:16:12 pm
Happy Birthday. Take a break, relax...okay, that's good. Back to work ;)
8/13/2013 08:51:59 am
I got to play some Xbox. It was a strange and alien sensation: I actually had time to play video games.
8/10/2013 11:52:01 pm
I'm sorry to hear that the book was not going to be out on the 10th. But hopefully the wait will be worth it! You know what would be a great consolation gift? The Crimson Vault before and after you fixed it. It would be interesting to see what you changed. Good luck and don't kill yourself working too hard!
8/13/2013 08:52:56 am
Man, I'm afraid that Crimson Vault before and after editing would scare you all away.
8/11/2013 02:16:16 am
Thems the breaks, Will. I'm still going to buy it, no matter when you release it. The real trick will be getting me to REMEMBER to buy it once it comes out. I wish authors would give a "pre buy" period, so i can buy it and have it downloaded when it releases. Just today, I realized that the sequel to "The Desert Spear" came out. It's been out for like six months.
8/13/2013 08:54:08 am
I would totally have a pre-order system on Amazon, but apparently they don't let self-published authors do that yet. Who knew?
8/11/2013 06:36:39 am
I loved the first book and can't wait for the next one. Scratch that... for this story i'm willing to wait. I just really wanted to thank you for the fact that you communicate with the readers and tell us whats going on. I'm currently waiting on the sequels to at least 6 series, 3 of which for about 2 years now (the authors have said nothing about when the sequels r coming out (for the 3 )). So I not only wanted to thank you for producing a good book, I also wanted to thank you for keeping us readers posted.
8/13/2013 08:55:52 am
Thanks, l33t-speaking Generic Reader!
8/11/2013 04:39:46 pm
Found house of blades on kindle while browsing and read the reviews. The first 17 pages were all 4 or 5 stars! I was very uncertain after that because I thought that the book couldn't possibly be that good. So I bought it, read it and all I have to say is, the reviews were all accurate. For a first book that was one of the best books I have ever read, and that's after books like Shogun and Wheel of Time. The concept was unique and awesome. The writing fluid and descriptive.
8/13/2013 08:57:43 am
I'll do my best to meet those expectations, Liam!
8/12/2013 12:26:59 am
I like longer books and more detail is great as long as you're not telling me about the the plants at the side of the road. We can wait. Except you know, after this one comes out, everyone gets all antsy and grumbly about when the THIRD one comes out :)
8/12/2013 01:23:55 am
I'm pretty sure I can't comment on that matter without spoilers, so I'll just say this: Simon and Alin are actually both defeated in battle by Saitama, the Caped Baldy.
8/12/2013 05:26:58 am
What in Z-City are you talking about Will?
8/12/2013 04:59:29 pm
The comic character? Lol! Does that mean he is exactly the same as the original?
8/13/2013 08:36:35 am
Oh dear God Will you did not actually use that reference. Please tell me you didn't actually do that.
8/13/2013 09:04:35 am
I'm not afraid to make manga references. I ain't scurred.
8/12/2013 03:38:48 am
I literally read the book last night and got super excited when I saw the sequel would be published in August. Honestly, when most books take two years to get a sequel I'm a-okay with waiting for a couple of more weeks.
8/13/2013 09:06:05 am
That's not embarrassing. Not here, anyway. What do you think I do with my free time?
8/14/2013 01:49:47 am
Hey Marina, don't be embarrassed about that. I practically live in my room reading. The only time my parents see me is at dinner time.
8/12/2013 04:21:21 am
Could a Traveler summon Genos or Metal Knight from Tartarus?
8/12/2013 05:26:36 am
Absolutely. A Ragnarus Traveler could even summon Pri Pri Prisoner from where he's imprisoned in the Vault, but I'm not sure why they'd want to.
8/12/2013 07:33:34 am
Will we be exposed to a lot of..."entities" from other territories? Or take a look inside of them themselves? I feel like there is a whole lot of stuff to look at.
8/13/2013 09:03:45 am
8/12/2013 07:32:06 am
Non? I like it.
8/12/2013 04:44:52 am
Well, it looks like I may not be able to write a positive review on your book quite yet as I said I would ;). But hey, as long as you say you're improving the book, then I'm happy, I think.... regardless of the minor delay releasing The Crimson Vault in August is still a feat to be proud of. Kudos to you. I'm sure that it'll be great!
8/13/2013 08:58:23 am
Thanks, Mike! I hope so!
8/12/2013 06:47:59 am
Have just finished House of Blades - bought it yesterday, and had me reading until 2am (and I had to be in work!).
8/13/2013 09:03:01 am
Thanks, Ed! My main purpose in life is to make people too sleepy for work.
8/14/2013 09:51:41 am
Don't worry, Will. It didn't.
8/13/2013 12:49:49 am
Just finished reading house of blades and loved it. Only have one question what happened to Erastes sword after simon beat him
8/13/2013 08:49:07 am
Thanks, Al! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
8/14/2013 08:16:53 am
Thx guess I realy should have remembered that. Ps I give you ultimate props for the onepunch manga reference
8/14/2013 01:35:05 pm
I must say I agree with Al, big props to you Will
8/15/2013 05:47:21 am
Hey, I'm a huge fan of obscure and semi-obscure references. It's all I can do to stop Simon from making Final Fantasy jokes.
8/13/2013 07:20:36 am
Hey I was wondering if there was a reason Kai called the swords Demon Fangs when everyone else calls them Dragon Fangs. Not sure if it was an accident or not!
8/13/2013 08:48:33 am
Nope! Sorry about that, that sounds like a typo. I'm fixing it as we speak.
8/14/2013 02:55:13 am
Great book! If I'm into a book it's hard for me to put down; House of Blades falls in this category. I was even reading on my lunch hour... Well really it was two hours, but for an hour of that I had my Kindle propped against my laptop so it at least looked like I was working.
8/15/2013 05:48:36 am
Once again, another victory against my nemesis: useful and productive work.
8/14/2013 12:00:38 pm
Bought the book read it in 24 hours no sleep at all. Great book! For me the House of Blades would get a 10 out of 10.
8/15/2013 05:45:51 am
I have sworn to eternally campaign against two forces: sleep and productive work. I'm glad to know my efforts were not in vain!
8/14/2013 07:01:02 pm
8/15/2013 05:44:58 am
Hey, thanks Chelsey!
8/15/2013 06:32:45 am
8/15/2013 06:48:11 am
Yeah, that was my main concern: that I promised you guys something that I can't (in good conscience) deliver on time. That makes me feel crappy.
8/15/2013 03:12:31 pm
This honestly the best book I can remember reading in a long time, and I've read a lot. Like, 3 whole books (maybe more, crazy right?). To show my dedication to this series and your new authorship, I'm even typing this comment using only my nose and a few soggy french fries to contact the keyboard. I thought maybe if I channeled enough energy into this, the dedication and focus would transfer through the computer and give you the strength to continue working on book 2. I've also named my hamburger, companion of aforementioned soggy fries, Will, after you. Yup.
8/15/2013 11:57:21 pm
Three books!? Slow down, you insatiable bibliophile. This world is not large enough to contain one such as thee.
8/15/2013 05:08:56 pm
This is totally irrelevant from the crimson vault and the house of blades but I have to ask;
8/16/2013 12:00:40 am
I do have a 360, and soon I will likely order an Xbox One. I'm not afraid of creepy Big-Brother-like Kinect monitoring, no sir.
8/16/2013 02:28:37 am
Buying an Xbox one? The first year it's out? From like...Microsoft?....
8/16/2013 02:49:36 am
If it makes you feel any better, I'll probably (eventually) end up with a PS4 as well.
8/16/2013 04:44:50 am
If its anything like the PS3, don't buy it. Buy the old PS2 which is a beuatiful piece of technology that lasts for years on end. The PS3 breaks within a year of ur purchase. Granted you already have an XBox.
8/16/2013 05:18:15 am
I think we can all agree the ps2 was a beautiful piece of machinery at least. Will won't need to purchase an Alienware computer. 1) it's too expensive for what you get. 2) I build computers for fun, and I will be assisting him building his next one. But I do agree with the sentiment, PC>console, currently at least.
8/16/2013 06:54:03 am
Are you both assuming I don't already have a computer? How do you think I'm writing this right now? Heck, how do you think I wrote House of Blades?
8/16/2013 08:05:24 am
Honestly? I thought you were plugging away on a 4 year old Dell laptop. That being said, let us know when you get a computer. :)
8/16/2013 09:16:12 am
Have you forsaken me Will? After all of the time my pawns have put in heralding your name and enabling your future take-over of the fantasy literary world? You Monster.
8/16/2013 01:32:26 pm
Evidently the Devil himself is commenting on my blog.
8/16/2013 04:46:03 am
I hate you auto correct...
8/16/2013 11:52:38 am
Keep up the good work man, I look forward to the book. I know saying this won't help but don't stress yourself out too much! Stress adds years! We would rather have an artist (and i say that because I mean artist not author, although you are both) that gives us many books through his long life than one that gives us a few then dies young from too much stress!
8/16/2013 01:34:15 pm
I feel like I'm dying, Kyle, I can tell you that. I am a shriveled-up husk of a man. I do nothing but work on this accursed book. Accursed, I say!
8/18/2013 01:47:34 pm
Or Rothfus it isnt that ethier
8/16/2013 01:44:54 pm
please forgive me for any grammatical or spelling or run on senteces... I have forever been a reader and not a writer =P
8/16/2013 02:50:26 pm
I don't care about that stuff. It's a blog comment; who cares if it's grammatically correct? As long as I can understand what you meant--and in this case, I can--you're fine.
8/16/2013 02:51:27 pm
P.S. That was comment #100 on this post, which means I probably need to do another blog post tomorrow. I would have already, but this BLOODY book is taking so BLOODY long to write that I've been doing practically nothing else.
8/17/2013 02:59:39 am
WHY?!? WHY DO THEY HAVE TO BE CALLED THE DAMN DRAGON ARMY?
8/17/2013 03:05:23 am
It's cheesy but I like it.
8/17/2013 03:13:58 am
Reminds me of those old action/ martial arts movies I watched as a kid.
8/17/2013 04:02:34 am
Mike, I'm noticing somewhat of a pattern with your names.
8/17/2013 04:05:03 am
The slightly longer answer is that I needed a way to differentiate the original 13 Valinhall Travelers from future Valinhall Travelers, like Simon, so that I had the opportunity to possibly take the story in certain directions AFTER this trilogy.
8/17/2013 04:27:44 am
8/20/2013 02:27:44 am
But if you think about it...are you?
8/17/2013 04:33:13 am
I downloaded House of Blades on Wednesday as a way to pass the time in between my two jobs. I had intended to only read in that time span on the two days I work doubles and drag out the book for a few weeks. I finished it on Friday at 3 in the morning. I am thrilled that it won't be five years until I can read Crimson Vault.
8/20/2013 02:28:41 am
Happy to distract you from work, Mayra! Distraction Man, awaaaaay!
8/17/2013 01:05:49 pm
So I heard a rumor the book is being released on the 24th. Confirm?
8/20/2013 02:26:39 am
The 24th? And there are eight letters in "Traveler"...24 divided by 8 is 3.
8/17/2013 02:11:45 pm
I loved house of blade, but don't do what some writers out there do by changing a character. I understand emotional truama, but a complete 180 turn is far to much. If you kept the characters as they were I will bow down and never touch another book but house of blades and crimson vault
8/20/2013 02:30:51 am
I'm glad you enjoyed it! But I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to character change. Will the characters change? Yes, of course they will. Will they change too much? I...guess...not?
8/23/2013 01:28:29 pm
I think I see what Simon is getting at. Like for example, remember in Blood Song, Vaelin was a little arrogant and didn't care if he had to fight or not? But at the end when he faced the shield, be said that he never wanted to draw his sword again and he was extremely humble? I think that was a good change but still, I'm pretty sure that's what Simons on to
8/17/2013 05:26:59 pm
I really enjoyed this book! I started it this morning and finished it up just now (3:00 am) and am very impressed! You did many things very well but most importantly I liked how you created a believably strong main character who has specific limits and boundaries. Hes not some all conquering badass who i know will win the fight before he even goes into it and that gives a lot of depth! Since it seems a war is coming up i look forward to seeing how you deal with the numbers of war, and i know that sounds stupid but i recently read a book series (Ririya Revelations) and was very disappointed by them. They would have a 20000 man army with maybe 3000 people in the largest city of the known world! anyway great work and my only complaint is that i'd like longer books :D
8/20/2013 02:33:02 am
8/17/2013 11:52:12 pm
I've been awake for 31 hours at this point, and one of the above posts made me think : "Who the hell does George R. R. Martin think he is, anyway?" Not because of the gaps between his novels, but what kind of jackass uses two middle initials? I mean sure, lots of people have two middle names. But using both? More like George Summers Eve Massengill Martin, AMIRITE?

Furthermore, Kick-Ass 2 sucked. That's $11 that should have been spent at the bar. I've had more fun over the course of two hours by drinking a bottle of Ipecac.

Ok, last one, I promise. What's up with Amazon and their "You saved $xx amount of money on this novel!1!" pricing? They advertise some of their pricing as author wet dreams, $10, then mark them down 90%. If I did that with my biz, my customers would be all, "You be trippin', pimpin'!" My customers don't actually talk like that, but I kinda wish they did. Makes it hard to take their pricing seriously. Most of the independent author novels I end up buying for $1 or so are lucky I don't file assault charges on behalf of the English language, present company excluded.

Uh, I don't now I you meant it or if you tried to be funny but but that last sentence is soo racist.
8/18/2013 01:23:26 am
The last sentence from your first comment.

I could be wrong, but I didn't think that was a racial stereotype so much as a stereotype about the crappy quality of most Chinese restaurants.
8/18/2013 01:48:00 am
Yeah, you totally misread that one, broseph. Mystery meat Chinese food chains have been a joke since forever.

He called you broseph

My middle name is Lawrence, and for a while I was trying to figure out a pseudonym making use of my middle name.

I must have been living under a rock then.

My feelings are rarely, if ever, bruised. I blame the Army. No worries, either way.

Look at Colin. His cold, rugged, handsome exterior masks the tender, emotional, handsome heart within. His thick skin is matched only by his capacity for boundless charity.

Dammit Will, its my birthday today and I wanted a good birthday present. Never mind, you can make it up to me by getting the Crimson vault out soon. I don't mind late birthday presents.
8/20/2013 02:21:09 am
You're a good man and/or woman, Rhys. And a very happy belated birthday to you, that I didn't get to wish you yesterday because I was working on my book. I weep.

Thanks, Anonymous, I agree.

Ya that might have been me... It kinda crashed
8/20/2013 03:49:00 am
Yeah, it happens. I just enjoyed pretending that I was agreeing with a mysterious ghost from the future.

When I paid a few bucks for the House of Blades I was expecting a halfway decent book that I'd never read again. I cant believe how wrong I was! I've read the book three times now and it doesn't get old! If I had to wait another six months for the Crimson Vault, I wouldn't care! (actually I probably would now that I know it's coming in just a few days) thanks for the great book Will!

I like the cut of your job :) or at least your thought process but sorry to say, I honestly think you would have fully sold me on the idea had you been able to back up your premis with a substantial bit more solid facts.

Outstanding blog post, I have marked your site so ideally I’ll see much more on this subject in the foreseeable future.
