Books Take A Long Time To Write
Are you hoping that my books are not coming out soon? Well, have I got a blog post for you!
First off, the bad news: we won't be releasing any new books in 2022.
I wanted to get another release out before the end of the year, but we're juggling a lot right now. I know some bright-eyed optimists among you were hoping for Waybound by Christmas, but Santa's sack of toys holds only coal for you this year.
The reason is pretty simple. We're working on three things right now: our first Kickstarter, the first book in a new series, and the last book in the Cradle series.
The Kickstarter concerns the rest of the team more than it does me, but the other two things are enough. I really want both of these books to work, so I'm spending longer on them than I normally would.
I have an unofficial motto that I've shared before: "I want to write the best six-month book I can." I still believe in that schedule, and I think an average of two books a year is the right pace, but in this case I just needed more time.
It's tricky to both launch a series and conclude another, especially one as big as Cradle. And I don't want to give either of those the short end of the stick, so I'm going to continue working on them instead of trying to rush a release before the end of 2022.
Plus, if I release three books next year, that will still be an average of two books per year!
(I'm not saying I WILL release three books next year. In fact, I have no idea what next year will look like. Telling the future is for Jedi and for the one-eyed old lady up the street who keeps telling me to be careful around ladders.)
Anyway, I'm disappointed I couldn't get you guys another book out before the end of the year. I like releasing books almost as much as I like jumping up and down on ladders.
10/6/2022 04:14:04 pm
It literally never occurred to me we’d get another book this year. That sounds like some insane expectations.
10/6/2022 04:20:26 pm
New series first.
10/6/2022 06:18:46 pm
I'll bet you he CAN'T release it first. Because of theories that I will not share for fear of wrath from the gods.
10/11/2022 09:34:43 am
What Kiara said!
10/6/2022 04:20:24 pm
Do what your gotta do, bro. You've been good to us. We trust you. We'll take those books just as soon as you think they're ready.
10/6/2022 07:17:06 pm
Couldn't agree more! Will take your time, we will all be hear eager for the new series and regretfully eager for the last installment of cradle. Eager because it's Cradle, regretful because I don't want Cradle to end 😂
10/22/2022 04:07:56 pm
I've been hooked on your books since our older brother got us to read them.
10/6/2022 04:25:36 pm
I understand holding yourself to a schedule and a goal, and I love that you do that. It allows for steady progress and continued advancement. I also think its important to give yourself grace when you don't meet goals or deadlines. Will, your fans are ecstatic at the hard work you put into telling us an amazing story. You do not have to be sorry for needing a bit more time to wrap up such a masterpiece. 1 book a year is still a treasure trove when most artists can barely put out a book every 5 years.
10/6/2022 04:25:46 pm
Omg good, bc I still need time to process my grief that this is the last Cradle book.
10/6/2022 05:57:43 pm
Me too! After that last Cradle book comes out, I might start wearing black. I wonder what would be considered a suitable mourning period. I might also start making up Cradle universe stories in my head so I don't miss Lindon too much. Or I could find out where Will lives and camp out on his doorstep until he agrees to write another book with Lindon and Company ... or until the next hurricane hits Florida. On second thought, Florida's too hot and humid for me. I'd melt like the Wicked Witch of the West. Wouldn't want to leave a mess for Will and his siblings to clean up.
10/6/2022 09:22:27 pm
What I’m going to miss most (when Cradle is finished) is Travis’s Yerin. So good. The series has been awesome and it is already more than we deserve. Looking forward to the finish (and dreading it too) - but Will isn’t Rothfusing it in any case.
10/6/2022 04:27:36 pm
Absolute goat. I trust the process
10/6/2022 04:32:39 pm
Take your time. I'm gonna be busy with work because of the big three holidays coming up anyway.
10/6/2022 04:37:34 pm
I’m pretty sure Eithan will have your back around Ladders. But, you might need to borrow some things from Lindon to make sure you have all the time you need.
10/6/2022 04:44:17 pm
Nope. Didn't even think that was an option. Appreciate your dedication to the series and characters you forced us to love. :D
10/6/2022 04:52:34 pm
I know you have a lot on your plate and I deeply respect and am grateful for both the speed and quality of your work, but if you could make an Eithan spin-off series of oh I don't know a zillion books of our favorite incorrigible, god-like scamp stunting on lesser sacred artists while tossing off scathing quips, that'd be swell; I am more than willing to provide the requisite Oreos.
10/6/2022 04:55:49 pm
Totally understand. Would rather have to wait then have quick garbage
10/6/2022 04:58:56 pm
No worries, Will! You put books out at a crazy pace that is such a treat for us! Each time we get a book I am surprised at how fast it came out, and then astonished at how good it is!!!! We are not disappointed that we have to wait a little bit :)
10/6/2022 05:17:26 pm
10/6/2022 05:30:42 pm
We trust you, Will. You've got a fan for life over here. The pact was sealed many eons ago and I will not be the one to break it.
10/6/2022 05:31:19 pm
Quality is always the better option. I have see so many authors try to tie a bow around a final book and ruin the series. Two or three books next year do not matter either, as long as you can keep producing and keep growing as an author. I cannot wait to get both books when they are released... I will buy them and the audio options.
10/7/2022 09:02:20 am
Agree with this totally. There is a LOT to wrap up in this last book. There has to be some sort of training montage with the Crew, 3 more Dreadgods to take care of, The Monarch.... situation....to resolve and lastly Surely/Eithan to rescue/avenge. Whew.... I'm tired just writing the list, I can't imagine trying to write the BOOK. Take your time, we'll be here.
10/6/2022 05:42:42 pm
Technically, 6 months from your July 5th release of Dreadgod would be January 5th of 2023 so really, you have until then and you’re still not breaking the 6 month book deal. No sweat.
10/7/2022 05:40:44 am
This is the technically right that's the most important type of right
10/6/2022 05:55:10 pm
You’re awesome and we appreciate everything you do for us. Today my son asked when Waybound will be released and I said hopefully within the first six months of next year. It never occurred to me it might be released this year. Take your time and do what you need to do. We will be waiting with bated breath. Team Lindon!
10/6/2022 05:56:15 pm
Take the time to do it right! As a fan from Day 1, I know that you will continue to produce quality. I will finish my re-read of Reaper and polish off Dreadgod a few weeks before the Wayward release. Thank you for all you do for your fans!
10/6/2022 05:59:59 pm
Will, if all the other comments weren't enough, I'll agree that I am ok waiting. I want the ending of this series to be just as top-shelf as the rest of the series has been. I'm enjoying my time re-reading in the meantime, and I look forward to the next series.
10/6/2022 06:18:54 pm
As desperate as I am for Waybound I’m not sure I’m ready for the series to end. If you need to split it just know that no one will mind.
11/2/2022 09:34:57 pm
totally agree ^^
10/6/2022 06:23:57 pm
I didn’t even consider having a book release for this year after dreadgod.
10/6/2022 06:26:57 pm
I'm going to start a Kickstarter for the pitchforks
John The Ninja
10/6/2022 06:41:19 pm
No rush amigo! Obviously we want to consume your brain words as often as possible but I truly just want to beat thing you write because the worlds and characters you create are truly special. Plus your not like some other Authors who make us wait years and question our own sanity. We love you and can’t wait to play my favorite game, avoid getting fired because I did zero work on Will Wight book release day (it really should be a national holiday)
10/6/2022 06:55:16 pm
Doesn't bother me when you bring out your new books. I'll just re-read the whole series again to kill some time.
10/6/2022 07:04:12 pm
Take as much time as you need man, but not too much. Not just cause we want the book soon, but we don’t want you to ruin them by over thinking/fixing them.
10/6/2022 07:11:32 pm
The Dragon Advances!
10/6/2022 07:12:40 pm
While disappointed, I fully support your decision. Much better to take the time to do it right rather than a rush job. We do not want another disappointment like GoT last season.
10/6/2022 07:22:08 pm
I would happily wait an extra 6+ months if it meant the ending of Cradle is the best it can be. Especially if it means you're taking care of yourself so you can keep writing great stuff!
10/6/2022 07:41:35 pm
My man, I'll wait as long as it takes to finish up Cradle right.
10/6/2022 08:28:28 pm
Hey, I know I'm just part of a pretty large group responding here, but hopefully my comment helps a bit. Take all the time you need, all your fans trust that you have the best interest of your series at heart, and I for one would rather you take a longer time than have the books not fully realize your vision for them. I'll just keep to my regular schedule of alternating between reading all of Cradle on Kindle and listening on audible every month until Waybound comes out, and I can finally have closure in what rapidly became one of my favorite book series of all time. Take your time, do what you do, finish the books to the standard you are happy with, and we will all be here when you are done.
10/6/2022 08:28:30 pm
Will, please don't be pressured to release it earlier. TAKE YOUR TIME! Even if it'll take an extra 1 year or 2 years or 3 years or 4 years, just do it an your own pace. We will patiently wait for you.
10/6/2022 09:03:16 pm
Having the book for christmas wasn't expected by the optimists. Instead it was expected by the cynics that knew recieving the last Cradle book this year just created a void next year.
Apostle of Vert
10/6/2022 09:13:45 pm
Please, write more cultivation books. Your Cradle books got me hooked for 4 weeks straight
10/6/2022 10:07:54 pm
Thanks for emphasizing quality over quantity in your writing while still managing a workmanlike pace. .
10/6/2022 10:18:28 pm
Soooo was I just late too the party... Or is this where you shared the name of the last book?
10/7/2022 01:06:04 am
You can write a book about OP space wizards that fly around in a stapler with hyper drives duct taped on that fire Lazer beams. I will still enjoy it!
10/7/2022 01:52:10 am
Will, I think we can all agree that you should take whatever time you need to finish Cradle the right way. Don’t mess this up for us! LoL
10/7/2022 03:22:54 am
I agree with not me here. You'll do fine take what time you need. Maybe imagine Sam up a falcons winning season while you're at it for a pallet cleanser (and the Panthers if you can fit them in). We all know those are all mostly fantasy
10/7/2022 04:08:34 am
Wait… Cradle is over? No!? That can’t be true.
10/7/2022 04:56:38 am
Will, you get those books out as soon as you feel comfortable with them. We love the books you write and the incredible stories you unravel before our eyes. Take your time and do it the right way. We will patiently wait with full eagerness.
10/7/2022 05:08:19 am
I hope the new book comes out first. I think a bigger break between Dreadgod and Waybound is better.
Matt - Rhino
10/7/2022 05:54:07 am
I like my books like I like my steak - Well done hahahahaha
10/7/2022 06:16:23 am
Jumping up and down on ladders is for chumps. Real men jump from one ladder to another! (Or from two...?)
10/7/2022 08:23:01 am
I am so invested in cradle I don’t even mind it take it a little longer to make sure the ending is good!
10/7/2022 08:49:41 am
Y'all heard him! 6 books next year 2 new series and a bonus cradle novella. (Jk, thank you for all of these amazing worlds to fall into and explore)
10/7/2022 10:04:35 am
Am I the only one who thinks we need more cradle art? I’ve noticed that we’re getting a lot more traction recently but I feel like I need a tattoo to honor this immaculate wordsmanship and storytelling genius.
10/7/2022 11:50:34 am
Thank you for a wonderful series, and for the heads up. Expectaions managed and all that :)
10/7/2022 12:08:16 pm
Don’t get it out, Will, get it right!
10/7/2022 12:20:48 pm
If it doesn't come out this year we will be okay. But if it isn't out in January of 2023 be prepared for mobs. With torches and pitchforks. (note to self go to hardware store for torches and pitchforks).
10/7/2022 01:24:20 pm
Full trust and patience Will. You've been awesome. Just don't pull a Rothfuss.
10/7/2022 04:23:37 pm
These comments make me wonder if rothfuss gets a google alert every time we use his name as a verb? I kinda feel bad about that. Also no worries. Looking forward to it.
10/9/2022 03:12:43 pm
I’m not ready for Cradle to be over, although I can sympathize if Will is. There’s a huge part of me hoping that the “new” series is Lindon and the gang joining Ozriel, and addressing some of that interstellar dysfunction.
10/9/2022 07:06:50 pm
Mr. Wight, we are just glad that you are well after the hurricane.
10/10/2022 03:45:32 pm
Would wait for a year or more if it meant an Anime might be in the works. This series cries out to be captured in that medium. I think I smell a Kickstarter.
10/11/2022 04:04:37 am
I've been reading cradle since secondary school (which is middle school and high school for any US residents) and know I'm in university and its sad to see it end and I want to read it as as soon as possible but please take your time I want to have an amazing end to a beautiful journey.
10/11/2022 06:20:12 pm
Can someone just confirm for me, this upcoming cradle book, after the last book dreadgod is going to be the last book?
10/12/2022 04:17:16 pm
Yes, this upcoming Cradle book (Waybound) is going to be the final Cradle book. I believe Mr. Wight has left open the possibility that he might revisit Lindon and Co. or Cradle again later, but it almost certainly is not the new project he is working on now.
10/11/2022 08:57:08 pm
All I know is that you have created such a concrete and nebulous world in the WAY that you could literally wrap any other author's work into a sector or iteration and have a collaboration on your hands. Not that I expect that to happen because a Wight Sanderson mashup would make my head explode.
10/12/2022 01:44:45 pm
You have to stick the landing or NOTHING that came before matters. So... if Waybound need to be 2-4 thousand pages we'll just have to wait...
10/12/2022 04:12:26 pm
Please wait until you’re finished with Waybound before you get on any ladders. Don’t want Sanderson to have to finish another series.
10/13/2022 12:29:48 am
Information requested:: A preorder date to we can use up our audible credits. Even if it's not out yet or the pre-order is as far as March 2023, most people, if they truly Care about Wei Shei Lindon, would still use their credits to support him.
10/13/2022 07:10:03 pm
10/13/2022 08:11:15 pm
It stars with this and next thing you know way bound comes out after the final game of thrones book.
10/14/2022 04:15:59 am
I shall only accept this if Eithan gets another pair of floating shoes out of this! Or maybe a set of cyan silk robes that shimmer with the ghost of remanants in the fabric. Or perhaps a smoking ring that chants a harmony chorus to everyone around you… the fashion comes first sir!
10/14/2022 12:41:22 pm
10/14/2022 05:20:48 pm
I have been a devoted reader of the Cradle series as it has been published and I think that I have been spoiled by the incredible pace and quality of the work that you have done. Sometimes it feels like you have a new book out every time I run out of my reading list and go looking for more. That feeling does not last long as I have frequently finished the latest book and desperately pulled up this blog in the hopes that the next books release date has been mentioned (and is soon!). I can't wait to see what Waybound has in store for us. Keep up the good work and maybe I'll be able to remain patient until 2023.
10/16/2022 06:15:02 pm
I love that you aim for such a pace but please don't feel like you're depriving your fans with something slower. The quality of story you're putting out keeps us on edge so we appreciate every minute you're putting in! Also, tell me how many authors put out Kickstarters and gifts for their community while writing the series... Can't wait for Waybound!!
10/20/2022 03:48:22 am
Take all the time, tbf I'm happy if an author releases once every two or three years let alone twice in one year. But I'm excited for the new series.
10/20/2022 11:31:02 am
Whenever you start feeling behind, I have two words for you: Patrick Rothfuss. You are doing great. You put out writing faster than almost anyone (Brandon Sanderson is a fantasy-writing robot and does not count).
10/20/2022 03:30:46 pm
Knowing what Waybound entails, I want it to be the biggest bestest book it can. It's so very rare a series I love know when to end with a bang, usually limping along, a pale shadow of the great story they once were, so Will, take your time and make it amazing. I hate that their story is ending, but that's a good thing. You didn't drag it on to make money, and I respect that.
10/22/2022 06:16:54 am
10/23/2022 06:14:27 am
wait wait wait what do you mean the last cradle book you better mean that when they go off iteration it's a new series
10/30/2022 02:20:07 am
I was just thinking it’s been awhile. Although disappointed I would rather wait for a spectacular ending than quickly have a meh ending. Can’t wait for my kickstarter books they will be a delightful surprise. I’ll have to check the last pages right away but I also know I’m just not that lucky.
10/30/2022 11:39:22 am
Fantastic series! Thank you for the hard work!
11/2/2022 01:04:30 am
Please take your time, I am expecting a epic finale for Cradle !!
11/3/2022 10:15:44 pm
As long as you are faster than GRRM, I am happy.
11/5/2022 11:46:59 am
As an author, I am amazed at the complexity and threads found in your novels. I love your humor and the shock of the haughty being laid low. I can hear your delight in those passages.
11/6/2022 09:34:06 am
I can see it now. Will releases Waybound at midnight January 1st, and the book is the end of Cradle and the start of a new series. Just so Will can play with our emotions lol. I don't think he would but it would be funny.
11/7/2022 05:15:46 pm
MANY LOUD HORN SOUNDS
11/8/2022 06:54:55 am
All good, dude. I really love your books. They are great. However, please, please, please do not pull a Patrick Rothfuss. It would suck to find ourselves in 2035 and you are giving a YouTube video about releasing a chapter in a series of books you wrote more than a decade ago.
11/10/2022 10:31:15 am
Willpower. Lol. Just realized why you use it so much. Nerd! Lol
11/10/2022 10:44:09 am
OMG I just got to the end! I've sucked this series up in about a months time. Will! I love your style, just light and fun and still a great adventure for all the characters. Well, except maybe poor Malice, I have hopes she's not as bad as she's coming out!
11/12/2022 08:44:27 pm
It amazes me how much pressure authors place on themselves now. You write amazing stories. Greatness simply cannot be rushed. The entitlement that modern fans seem to have is astonishing to me. Time and again you see a complete lack of understanding of the creative process. If I were a guy like Rothfus or Martin, I would give the fans the finger and say, “You’ll get your book when and IF I’m goddamned good and ready to give it to you, and not before.
11/13/2022 06:50:19 pm
I find the lack of Subnautica plugs distressing.
11/15/2022 06:41:55 pm
I finished my last book series and saw this one suggested to me. I decided to buy the first one because it was 99 cents, figured it couldn't be too bad. Fast forward 10 days later and I've plowed through the whole series like an addict with an unattended brick of coke. I need my fix man, but I guess I gotta wait. That's ok though because for the first time in my life, I have the urge to re-read a series. I hope it'll last til you drop the next book. Gratitude for all you've done Will.
12/13/2022 01:00:39 pm
It did not last.....
11/18/2022 08:01:35 pm
I’m so glad cradle is almost over.
11/23/2022 08:13:08 pm
I have read each book about 6 times and I'm dying to know which side his black flame and which side his pure core is on? Gratitude
11/24/2022 04:20:41 pm
Please take your time, I'd rather read an epic finish to Cradle than see people compare it to GOT season 8 (even though I personally enjoyed the final season when when binging all 8 seasons together). In the meantime I'm reading the Stormlight Archive, and you probably know just how long each book is.
11/24/2022 07:00:22 pm
Apparently, Blogs Take A Long Time To Write.
12/7/2022 04:32:42 pm
I came here to balance out toxicity in the comments but it is clear that all your fans adore and trust you as an author as much as I do at least! I have never spoken on this forum and I don't suspect that I will again but I do want to have down in writing what I have been telling family, friends, and coworkers for years. Cradle is something incredible. I must have read/listened to them 10 times each and 15 times for Ghostwater and the UK Tournament. They were the most perfect distraction/inspiration for two years of awful in my life and I feel incredibly lucky to have found them, and doubly so to be the one who gets to introduce others to them. I cannot wait for them to come out in a hardback version so they can have their own full shelf in my office where the book aura will be strong.
