Are you hoping that my books are not coming out soon? Well, have I got a blog post for you!
First off, the bad news: we won't be releasing any new books in 2022. I wanted to get another release out before the end of the year, but we're juggling a lot right now. I know some bright-eyed optimists among you were hoping for Waybound by Christmas, but Santa's sack of toys holds only coal for you this year. The reason is pretty simple. We're working on three things right now: our first Kickstarter, the first book in a new series, and the last book in the Cradle series. The Kickstarter concerns the rest of the team more than it does me, but the other two things are enough. I really want both of these books to work, so I'm spending longer on them than I normally would. I have an unofficial motto that I've shared before: "I want to write the best six-month book I can." I still believe in that schedule, and I think an average of two books a year is the right pace, but in this case I just needed more time. It's tricky to both launch a series and conclude another, especially one as big as Cradle. And I don't want to give either of those the short end of the stick, so I'm going to continue working on them instead of trying to rush a release before the end of 2022. Plus, if I release three books next year, that will still be an average of two books per year! (I'm not saying I WILL release three books next year. In fact, I have no idea what next year will look like. Telling the future is for Jedi and for the one-eyed old lady up the street who keeps telling me to be careful around ladders.) Anyway, I'm disappointed I couldn't get you guys another book out before the end of the year. I like releasing books almost as much as I like jumping up and down on ladders. -Will

I understand holding yourself to a schedule and a goal, and I love that you do that. It allows for steady progress and continued advancement. I also think its important to give yourself grace when you don't meet goals or deadlines. Will, your fans are ecstatic at the hard work you put into telling us an amazing story. You do not have to be sorry for needing a bit more time to wrap up such a masterpiece. 1 book a year is still a treasure trove when most artists can barely put out a book every 5 years.

Me too! After that last Cradle book comes out, I might start wearing black. I wonder what would be considered a suitable mourning period. I might also start making up Cradle universe stories in my head so I don't miss Lindon too much. Or I could find out where Will lives and camp out on his doorstep until he agrees to write another book with Lindon and Company ... or until the next hurricane hits Florida. On second thought, Florida's too hot and humid for me. I'd melt like the Wicked Witch of the West. Wouldn't want to leave a mess for Will and his siblings to clean up.

Quality is always the better option. I have see so many authors try to tie a bow around a final book and ruin the series. Two or three books next year do not matter either, as long as you can keep producing and keep growing as an author. I cannot wait to get both books when they are released... I will buy them and the audio options.

Agree with this totally. There is a LOT to wrap up in this last book. There has to be some sort of training montage with the Crew, 3 more Dreadgods to take care of, The Monarch.... situation....to resolve and lastly Surely/Eithan to rescue/avenge. Whew.... I'm tired just writing the list, I can't imagine trying to write the BOOK. Take your time, we'll be here.

Take all the time you need, all your fans trust that you have the best interest of your series at heart, and I for one would rather you take a longer time than have the books not fully realize your vision for them. I'll just keep to my regular schedule of alternating between reading all of Cradle on Kindle and listening on audible every month until Waybound comes out, and I can finally have closure in what rapidly became one of my favorite book series of all time. Take your time, do what you do, finish the books to the standard you are happy with, and we will all be here when you are done.

I have been a devoted reader of the Cradle series as it has been published and I think that I have been spoiled by the incredible pace and quality of the work that you have done. Sometimes it feels like you have a new book out every time I run out of my reading list and go looking for more. That feeling does not last long as I have frequently finished the latest book and desperately pulled up this blog in the hopes that the next books release date has been mentioned (and is soon!). It amazes me how much pressure authors place on themselves now. You write amazing stories. Greatness simply cannot be rushed. The entitlement that modern fans seem to have is astonishing to me. Time and again you see a complete lack of understanding of the creative process. If I were a guy like Rothfus or Martin, I would give the fans the finger and say, “You’ll get your book when and IF I’m goddamned good and ready to give it to you, and not before.

I have never spoken on this forum and I don't suspect that I will again but I do want to have down in writing what I have been telling family, friends, and coworkers for years. Cradle is something incredible. I must have read/listened to them 10 times each and 15 times for Ghostwater and the UK Tournament. They were the most perfect distraction/inspiration for two years of awful in my life and I feel incredibly lucky to have found them, and doubly so to be the one who gets to introduce others to them. I cannot wait for them to come out in a hardback version so they can have their own full shelf in my office where the book aura will be strong.
