In which we ramble on.
And by we, I mean me.

A Word from the Darkness

Hey, all! I know it's been quiet from me for the past few weeks, and partially that's because I wanted to leave the Valin scene up so everyone got a chance to see it. But also, I've been keeping busy!

Here's what's up in Will World.

First of all, some of you may be glad to know that the House of Blades audiobook is back on track. I started it last summer expecting to have it out by the fall, but I ended up having to stop recording so that I could focus on OSAS. Now I'm recording again, looking to finish it as fast as I can. So if that's something you're waiting on, it shouldn't be too much longer!

Speaking of waiting, there's another project making progress 'round these parts: the Shadow/Sea paperbacks! I proofed a digital copy of the Sea layout this morning, which means that the physical books are only a few weeks away.

And, because you know I like to rush books out as fast as humanly possible, I'm hard at work on the Elder Empire sequels: Of Dawn and Darkness / Of Darkness and Dawn. With the Empire being torn apart by the warring Guilds, the Elders have started making trouble. Shera and Calder both look for help...but they turn to opposing Guilds for guidance. Shera goes to the priestly Luminian Order, and Calder seeks out his former allies in the Blackwatch.

Release date TBA! ...but it won't be too many months from now. I work hard, not smart.

Also, I'll be headed to Boston in a couple of weeks for the legendary PAX East! If you'll be at the convention, let me know, and I'll...say hi, or sign a book, or something. I don't know, I don't plan ahead. But send me an email, or a tweet, or a Facebook message and we'll make something happen!

On a side note, if I haven't responded to your blog comment in a timely manner, sorry! The blog notifications have been going to my junk folder instead of my inbox, so several of them have slipped through the cracks.

That's all the news that's fit to print, ladies and gentlemen. As always, thanks for reading!

Honestly, Fleur, it's not easy to get signed books to anyone I don't personally know. At some point, I'm sure we'll have a process for that, but until that time...let me know if you're in Florida!

The awesome thing about living on the east coast is that all the release dates hit here first. The not-so-awesome thing is that Amazon is on west coast time, so sometimes we're a little out of sync.

Hello! Greetings from China!(Not Chinese, just teaching English here.)

First time poster and I wanted to say how much I've loved both your series. Amazon suggested I'd like the Traveler's Gate Trilogy, and they weren't kidding. I loved Simon so much.

So, when they told me that you had TWO new books out, I was ecstatic. Maybe wrong for me to say, but I think I love the "Elder Empire" more than "Traveler's Gate" right now. Caldar and Shera are both fantastic characters(though I sympathize more with Calder.)

Incredibly exited to hear that we're going to learn more about the Blackwatch in the next book. All of the guilds seem incredible, but Blackwatch just seems the most "unique" to me. Can't wait to learn more about them.

Anyway, I wish you luck in completing the new books(though don't work TOO fast) and I can't wait to read them!

Great to hear from you, Bookworm! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you; busy couple of weeks here.

I can tell you this: I definitely like the Elder Empire more than the Traveler's Gate. Not conceptually, necessarily, but I feel like my writing is several steps beyond what it was in City of Light...and miles past House of Blades.

Thanks for taking the time to reach out! Tell your students I said [whatever "hello" is in their dialect of Chinese].

Hi will, just a quick question, in the traveler's gate series, there is this power demonstrated by Indirial and Kai that I am not sure what function and kind of power is it. It is said that white light shine from their skin. thanks!

That's pretty vague. I don't remember if diamond or the white flame have any outward signs, so I don't know if that's it. Which book do you remember seeing this in? Crimson Vault or City of Light?

Crimson Vault, when Indirial used it during the assassination of the king against the wand, and Kai used it again Alin's green light walls and emerald bracelets from Rhalia in Elysia

I do know what you're thinking of, Jim, and unfortunately I can't give you too much detail on it. I'm considering it as a minor plot point in the future, so I want to keep it in reserve.

That said, it directly counteracts the abilities of other Territories. In general, that's the effect.

I don't know Jim I read over the battle in City of Light you mentioned when incarnating Indirial was fighting the incarnated king and he used the rod of harmony. I didn't see anything that leapt out at me. The rod didn't work because indirial was only using internal powers of the house. Then his chains turn into steel. I just couldn't find it.,. Probably my fault trying to help a fellow fan instead of leaving it to Will.
On the other example when Kai fought Alan, i haven't read that scene in awhile but I feel I remember it being him powering through the green shields with steel. Could be wrong though. I vaguely remember the chains glowing when he was restrained. Or something

Damn, I don't have enough money to go to PAX Boston. Is there a Territory I can sneak into and steal mad loot? Or sell an item that belonged to the Emperor?
