How About a Preview?

I know I've been pretty quiet over the past few months, and that's because I'm working hard to release City of Light before the end of this month. As soon as I have a more definite date, I'll give it to you.

But I haven't been a good host recently, and I feel like I have to make it up to you. Therefore, here's a scene from the early part of City of Light.

I'm not sure where exactly this scene will end up in the final version of CoL--I still have some decisions to make regarding how the book's introduction is structured. But I suspect this will make up part of Chapter 1 or Chapter 2.

(I haven't edited this scene much, so it's still a little rough. If you happen to notice a typo or two, please let me know and I'll fix it ASAP.)

Click "Read More" whenever you're ready to see the City of Light sample.

Enjoy!

'twas the Night of Midwinter...

12/25/2013

'Twas the night of midwinter, and all through the House
Not a creature was stirring. Not even you, little mouse.
My darlings were nestled all snug on their shelves,
Why, they were so tired they'd silenced themselves.

When out in the hall there arose such a cry,
That I sprang from my bed to summon the Nye.
Then what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But the Eldest of Nye, with a single bright tear.

"I did not mean to wake you. It's not nearly dawn,
but tonight is the night we can speak of what's gone.
We once were much more than one house, you see
And nobody remembers. Not even me.

On midwinter, my people, we speak of the past,
Of what our world was, right up to the last.
We came from a land of both shadow and steel,
Until those proud fools, they shattered the seal."

The Eldest, he spoke more than I'd ever heard,
But I only caught perhaps every third word.
You see, I was tired, and my dolls were asleep,
And you know my hate for that old Nye runs deep.

So that's all that I know, now I'm going to bed.
If you want to know more, ask the Eldest instead.

As he watched Kai walk through the bedroom door, Simon couldn't help but think
he should have seen this coming. Kai never gave him a straight answer. In the morning, he would try and ask Indirial, see if he had anything to add about the origins of Valinhall.

Why did Kai ever feel the need to speak in rhyme, anyway?

Crimson Vault Deleted Scene - What Happened To The Bears?

9/14/2013

The bear charged through the Elysian Gate, answering the Traveler's call.

Alin's voice hung in the air, demanding and rich with power. Where his summons had previously sounded no more insistent than a polite request, now it rang with all the authority of a king. The call promised everything the bear wanted: strong prey, a challenge, and a chance to ride into battle beside his brothers. He was all but powerless to resist.

Even though this summons hardly sounded like it came from Alin at all.
