I can't believe it's already here. So excited.
I'm getting close, Harry! So close!
Is it finished? Upload started? :)
Can't wait :D
I haven't started the upload yet, Sam. I'm still waiting on some feedback, while simultaneously putting the file into the right format.
Soon, though. Soon. I promise, I'll let you know as soon as I start uploading.
I couldn't help but be reminded of this!
That's pretty much exactly what I thought, Sam.
Several hours has never been a longer period of time than it is right now.
This is the exact usage of "Ready, Steady, Wait,"
I call, cruel and unusual punishment.
And you are early even on Central European Time.
Thanks a lot!
Hurry and load this so I have an excuse to not go to physics lecture, thx.
So can I let my wife know I will be Un available for the next day or so?
Excellent. Thank you Will.
This pleases me greatly
That is one of the coolest cover art I have seen for a book. Just that image made we want to read the book. Now I am going to be checking in every hour just to make sure I can read it as soon as possible.
That's pretty cool. You may live to wight another one
Congrats on being very nearly finished.
I see what you did there.
I expected the city to have more of a golden glow. Not sure what's up with the lavender overtones. Unless of course, that isn't actually the city of light. It could be another territory impersonating the city of light. Yeah, I bet that's what this is. Will, you should do something about this ASAP. Forget about publishing your book, find out whose impersonating the city of light and execute them pronto!
Other than the unexpected color scheme, the cover looks good.
...remember Alin explored a few districts in The Crimson Vault, and each district had a different color theme? Gold for valor, green for patience, blue for mercy, silver for wisdom, white for selflessness, orange for loyalty, red, pink, violet, and I forgot the rest.
Congrats on finishing, can't wait to start reading it.
Yes at least I will have something to look forward to after work it will be a great weekend!!
Reviews are this week. This makes this week bearable. Thanks.
Just praying it comes tonight or tomorrow morning (CEST) have a free day tomorrow and I am in terrible need of a good book to make a free day into a GREAT day :D
I'm so happy. This is the best day ever! Will Wight, you are my new hero!
Ooooh, I like. While I have nothing against the other two covers, I think this one does take a leap forward in terms of quality and eye-catching imagery. Can definitely see the progression from 'completely unknown self-publisher' to 'Holy-shit, this guy actually managed to self-publish!' with your works.
So glad this book is going to be ready in the near future - my circadian rhythms are destroyed by a jacked up work schedule (Army FTW) and it will be nice to have a book I looked forward to in hand to keep me company during night shifts.
Anywho - congratulations on finishing up at such a breakneck speed. While I love writers like Patrick Rothfuss who are meticulous, perfect and godawful slow in their writing - I am always amazed and impressed when an author pushes out more than a book a year.
Will you're killing me I just can't wait to read city of light I love all your other stuff and I'm super excited for this one.my question is are there going to be more after this one
I think he mentioned he had some ideas in the works. I wanna say he posted about it sometime in the last 5 months? If your impatiently wondering, you could try to find it.
Or wait till he responds ;)
This cover takes me there. Very excited about this book. I was just telling a friend of mine about the series and why he should be it.
What can I say Will, you are my hero!
I hope the UK amazon is quicker uploading it than they were for the crimson vault...
So, soon like today? tomorrow? so freaking jazzed!
Good show! This calls for a celebration: *Goes to set Europe's The Final Countdown" on repeat until CoL is available on Amazon*...
da da da daaaaaa. dada da da daaaa...
*Joins Becky in Europe for a night on the town to celebrate* Woot!
This is just a barely thought through idea but what if in the next book in this universe after the valin one you introduce another territory made of a corrupted Elysian light called Dis? Possibly made by a mad scientist trying to replicate valinhall?
You should know that I can never, ever take suggestions this specific. Unclear intellectual copyright.
Now, even if I was already planning on creating a Territory of corrupted light--or a Territory called Dis--I couldn't do it, because you might have the case for a lawsuit.
Would you win the suit? Probably not. But the point remains that I wouldn't risk it by using an idea that was significantly similar to something a fan suggested.
So...please stop posting such specific ideas. If you did happen to post something that I wanted to use, you might cause me some trouble.
"In your next series, you could have someone try to replicate Valinhall and screw up." = Valid suggestion. It's an idea that I may have already had, but it's vague enough that I could go any direction with it.
"In your next series, your protagonist should be Simon's daughter, a blue-haired Valinhall/Elysia dual Traveler with two swords." = Too specific. Pull back. Now, even if I HAD been planning on doing exactly that, I'd have to change it, or it would look like I was stealing your idea.
Again, even if you did sue me for something like that, it probably wouldn't go anywhere because you DID intend it as a suggestion. But I don't want to take the risk.
Before the inevitable questions: fanfiction is in a different category. Apparently.
I'm currently taking legal advice from many different sources, some of whom are only questionably professional, but I genuinely don't want to run the risk of any trouble with the law. At all. And copyright law is such a vague, nebulous swamp that any number of terrible traps could be lurking within.
So, from here on out, just...use your best judgment. Ideas are great, fanfiction is great, just don't get too specific with your suggestions lest I land in trouble.
You may want to think about some version control software for your writing. We use some where I program and it's pretty cool for programming use. With version control, you could point to a day and a revision and say, "See I was developing this idea back in 2012. You didn't mention it in a blog post till 2014. This idea is mine." We use redmine (http://www.redmine.org/) and SVN at different times times for document tracking. Both are free but not really useful for document tracking. I've never used it but zoho docs (http://www.zoho.com/docs/) looks interesting and may be all you need and has a free plan. Of course the easiest thing would be to have people not post specific ideas.
I read somewhere that one thing people do is to mail or email themselves or someone they know with their ideas etc and they get postmarked or time stamped.
Noted, Will. I also hadn't thought of it that way.
Also Mesmerizing Suggestion has posted ideas on some of your previous posts as well if memory serves. Dunno i f I'd take all of them seriously though.
You, sir, are totally my hero right now. And no, that cover did NOT make me more anxious to dive into the book. Nope, not at all!
Thank goodness I've got a ton of stuff to do at work tomorrow, which will hopefully make the day go by so fast I manage to forget about waiting for the book.
how long will it take to get the city of light on amazon for the kindle fire hd?
As far as I am aware, exactly the same time as any other kindle.
This is, I believe, the second time you've asked a question about the Kindle Fire HD, so let me answer you more thoroughly:
As Tempest said, the same time as for any other Kindle. There is no difference in availability based on your device. All a Kindle device--or a free Kindle app for your smartphone or computer--allows you to do is to access the Kindle Store. As soon as the book is uploaded to the Kindle Store, it will be available on all Kindle-enabled devices in that region...
...including, fortunately, the Kindle Fire HD.
Wow!!! I started the traveler's gate trilogy 2 nights ago and couldnt stop reading - Imagine my surprise that as soon as I finish the first two books I find out that the third one is almost here as well. You, Sir, are a true gentleman.
PS: I hope you are releasing it worldwide at the same time - you have a fan from India here who cannot wait to get his hands on CoL
You just made my heart take flight!!! So excited!!!! You are totally my favorite person right now!!!
Do you have a progress bar up yet? I am waiting not so patiently
My wife is also waiting not so patiently
*My wife has no influence on spelling or grammar errors in the above post
I just wanted to say thank you for such a great series. I found you via the top reads over in /r/Fantasy on reddit about a month ago. I was hooked immediately. I'm excited to read CoL and exited that you plan on continuing to write in this universe. Love your work!
All that lightning in the cover art got me thinking...
Can an Incarnation enter into a territory that isn't their own? If so does it carry similar repercussions as entering their own territory?
On totally different line of thought; the lavender coloring brings to my mind the Lirial territory (not sure if that's simply a subconscious correlation with Leah, the lavender color and her territory). Is there a Lirial Incarnation? Or are they to smart to get sucked into that kinda position?
Regardless, awesome cover art, awesome quick releases on the novels and thanks for the short stories to tide us greedy ' B's ' over until the 3rd book gets here. You're an awesome person and a amazing writer. Have fun at your thing (convention?) tomorrow bro!!
P.S. - When do we get the next book? ;) You know the one with Alin's sister wielding the serrated meat cleaver as long as Simon's sword and wearing the Jason mask? ;)
In book 2, Valin enters Endross after Simons second attempt to slow him down.
And presumablely yes there should be a Lirial incarnation because there were 10 Hanging trees as of Book 1. The only territories' incarnation not sealed by them was Elysia.
Would it have been possible for you to do a pre-order thingy on Amazon - so that I could have just bought the book and had it delivered as soon as it was done? I've already checked your blog like 20 times waiting for an update :(
Ha, you and I both Patrick. I think I've heard it mentioned that Amazon doesn't allow pre orders for self published works. Shame.
I'd love to do that, Patrick, but it's like J said: I can't put up a pre-order. Kindle Direct Publishing does not provide that option.
Supposedly that's one of the planned features, but it's not here yet.
You can, however, go to my Amazon page and sign up for an automated Amazon newsletter that will send you an email when I release a new book. Just FYI.
Hmm Michael G Manning is a self published author I believe and has had a preorder available.
Not sure but Mannings series was a really great little surprise that Amazon suggested to me one day
Despite having developed a deep-seated fear of couches, I've really enjoyed reading this series. Just not on the couch.
Very nice cover!! Must be exciting to finally be ready to publish.. Thank you for the exciting adventure!
I am excited, but I'm also relieved. I've been exhausted for this past couple of months. And now I have to go to PAX, which would ordinarily be a ton of fun, but now I'm afraid I'll sleep through the whole thing.
I hope you get some good rest since your work on CoL is done! Enjoy your time, and if you do sleep through PAX (which I hope you aren't that exhausted), sleep in the satisfaction of knowing you have made your fans very, very happy! :)
WOW! Me likely,! Just re-read everything just to prep for COL! Wish I could have made it to UCF to meet you and thank you in person, had to work and missed it.
It's all right; I should have made a bigger deal about the Festival on the blog, Facebook, etc. I was just so consumed by CoL that everything else paled in comparison.
Will you do realize that when CoL finally hits for purchase at least 800 boys, girls, men, and women will scream like a crowd of raving 12 yr. old fan girls, inevitably a few will pass out, and proceed to buy your book
Honestly you write amazing books but what really amazes me is how much you connect with your fans keep up the good work
I am going to have to restrain my curiosity an enthusiasm until tomorrow I guess. Get some sleep, Will you've more than earned it. :)
Hope you enjoy your convention. I'll check back later.
I feel like ripping your clothes off and making wild sex with you, but I'm a guy so I'll chill. And finally took you long enough. I can't read any other books because your series gave me such a high standard. I hate you for making your books so damn good and giving me standards
Should I look at Amazon first?
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!
I must know when I will be able to download it on the kindle app. I keep checking to see if its up yet after seeing that cover. So please for all of us who keep checking let us know when to look?
Third time I checked amazon today, may as well check again, only been about twenty minutes.
I am alternating between hitting refresh every 2.17 seconds to see if you have a new post announcing your book on amazon and trying to figure out how I can threaten/coerce/plead you into doing nothing but writing. No more fun for you! I have sketched up a setup where you work on a toilet and are fed intravenously so that you don't ever have to move away from your keyboard.
All jest aside, I am an avid fantasy and science fiction reader who immensely enjoys your work and looks forward to reading a lot more from you in the future. Keep up the good work!
you really do have morals.. i planned almost the exact same thing but i was just not going to feed him unless i was satisfied with his writing progress
I have a list of authors I would do much the same to.
Does this make us terrible people?
"No talking in the writing cells!"
"You need to sleep? Tough, I need that book. Get writing."
^You all are absolutely brilliant. Please tell me that these plans are actually underway! ;)
^ these all sent me into violents fits of silent laughter in class! Absolute gold! I would put adrenaline in the IVs so that they would write like maniacs. Positive reinforcement? Never.
Strangely enough, that pretty much describes the layout of my writing room. It's a Saw-like death contraption that chains me in the room, and I can only earn enough slack in the chain to reach my next meal by hitting my daily writing goal.
So this is both great timing and bad timing for me. Great, because I'm about to finish up Parahumans: Worm.. but bad because I'm officially broke until I get my first paycheck. Anyways, it's great news.
Did you ever get to have that dinner with all those awesome authors? If so, how did that go?
I'll be staying up till 2:00 AM PDT tonight in the hope that I can read COL. That and preparing taxes. (Telling myself I'm not up till two for work makes it easier to take.)
As an aside, are you in the market for a CPA? I'd be willing to work for books...
That said, is your next series going to be in this world? or something completely new?
This is not nice and as one of your rare female fans you should make me happy and finish this book! I'm ready to die!!! I've already read the other two books three times! :'(
Quit hassling the guy, he's busted his balls to get the book to this stage, it's out of his hands now. Lets send all of our misplaced impatience toward amazon for not uploading the book instantly.. Or we could stop being so freaking ungrateful. We all enjoy the book, which is awesome, so what can we do (besides anything productive)..? Abuse the author! What a way to thank someone who's created something we all enjoy. Keep doing what your doing Will, I'll buy anything you release. No matter the wait time between books.
Nice alt George R. R. Martin.
Thanks alt Liberachi, I appreciate the comparison
From what I can tell, Will doesn't mind at all. In fact, at the rate he responds to comments, I would go so far as to assume he enjoys it. So let's let Will bask in the enthusiasm of his readers. :)
At the rate I USUALLY respond to comments. I've been kind of out of commission for the past week, but I'm trying to catch up.
And thanks for your kind words, Ken! But I don't feel very hassled by people who are enthusiastic to get the next book. It shows me that they liked the previous two. I do appreciate that you're willing to wait, though--it keeps me sane to remember that readers aren't just one big, many-headed hydra slavering for the next book. You're all people, and you understand that life can get in the way.
Thought I'd let you know... you can type the character "™" by using alt-0153. Because every good internet nerd needs to have it memorized.
That's very useful, actually. Now I can look more legit in the future!
I just finished a trilogy that Amazon suggested I would like, and I was left sorely disappointed. The whole thing felt like the author was trying to rush to the end and left out a lot of depth to the characters, scenes, and universe. Now I'm practically salivating from excitement to read the amazing ending to this trilogy. I look forward to waiting for more of your works in the future.
Anyone know if (and how long) of a time difference might there be between CoL being avaible on Amazon.com and to other Amazon sites (Uk or Germany) ?
It's not up on the author's page, but I found it here:
